Matches against Halifax commenced in 1958/59 with the abolition of Third Divisions North and South. Since then we have met 48 times, all league matches, with us having won exactly half of them, 24 games, with Halifax having won 13, the other 11 finishing level. I know it’s not the same corporate identity, having been wound up and re-formed, but they’re called Halifax and play at the Shay so that’s good enough for me.

I hesitate to write this now as most of the recent matches have had the referee changed at very short notice but anyway, as it stands, it will be high-flying Elliott Swallow, from the South Shore area of Blackpool. Aged around 30, he was educated at Lancaster University. He joined Arriva and within 5 years had worked his way up to Head of Operations. Last year he moved on to Transport for Wales, based in Cardiff, as Head of Current Operations.

This is his fourth season at this level and his overall stats are 45 matches, 186 yellows and 6 reds.

He refereed Southend twice last season, performing particularly well in our televised 3-2 win at Woking. Bookings for Ralph and Neal and one of theirs. Later in the season he was a late change for the match at Barnet. Another victory (3-1) and yellows for Kensdale, Atkinson and Gubbins plus three of theirs including Fonguck.

His only game so far this season was, again, televised – Oldham’s 3-2 win over Dorking.

Assisting are Flight Lieutenant Martyn Mitchell, based at High Wycombe but representing the Liverpool Referee’s Association and Martin Parker from Wakefield.

Will Davis from Stockport will be Fourth Official.
