League games against Oldham commenced in the early ‘60s and we have played them pretty regularly since. We hold a clear lead with 18 wins to their 13 with 10 draws.
Saturday’s match will be refereed by Andrew Humphries who is in his first season at National League level having been promoted in the close season. He is a teacher from Daventry and shouldn’t be found wanting for fitness, having once completed 11 marathons in 11 days raising money for MS research.
His only previous Southend match was the home game against Eastleigh on a Friday night in August – the night of the tennis ball protest. We won 2-0 with cautions for Miley and one of theirs. I thought he had a very reasonable match.
He has refereed 15 National League matches so far this season with 58 yellows and 2 reds. This will be his first Oldham match.
Assisting will be Alan Hull (not the one Southend released as a youngster and not the ex-Lindisfarne front-man) from Sheffield and Samuel Clayton from Rotherham. The latter is Access Development Manager at Sheffield Hallam University, where he had previously studied Sports Business Management.
Fourth Official is Melissa Burgin from Hyde, Head of Opportunities and Wellbeing at Salford University, officiating in her first Southend match.
