League games against Oldham commenced in the early ‘60s and we have played them pretty regularly since. We hold a clear lead with 18 wins to their 13 with 10 draws.

Saturday’s match will be refereed by Andrew Humphries who is in his first season at National League level having been promoted in the close season. He is a teacher from Daventry and shouldn’t be found wanting for fitness, having once completed 11 marathons in 11 days raising money for MS research.

His only previous Southend match was the home game against Eastleigh on a Friday night in August – the night of the tennis ball protest. We won 2-0 with cautions for Miley and one of theirs. I thought he had a very reasonable match.

He has refereed 15 National League matches so far this season with 58 yellows and 2 reds. This will be his first Oldham match.

Assisting will be Alan Hull (not the one Southend released as a youngster and not the ex-Lindisfarne front-man) from Sheffield and Samuel Clayton from Rotherham. The latter is Access Development Manager at Sheffield Hallam University, where he had previously studied Sports Business Management.

Fourth Official is Melissa Burgin from Hyde, Head of Opportunities and Wellbeing at Salford University, officiating in her first Southend match.

4th official from almost on their doorstep, 2 assistants quite close too with the ref based roughly in the middle of the us and Oldham.

Hoping they aren't coming down on the Oldham coach 🙏

IIRC after the tennis ball incident, he was quite peeved with that, and didn't give us another free kick for the rest of the game?.

The delay from the tennis balls was in the 10th minute. We had a number of freekicks thereafter.

Melissa is unavailable. Her place with the numbers board will be taken by Lee Hible, from the Sheffield area. He is Assistant Manager at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre.
To clarify, she was taken off Fourth Official duties to referee the WSL match between West Ham and Man Utd at Dagenham.

Maher was upset with the official(s), especially for the penalty shout. Interesting that no other Shrimper has commented - maybe because we didn't lose the game?!?

It’s just par for the course… how many penalties should we have had in the last 3 months? Glenn Pennyfather reckoned the ref had already turned his back on the play and was looking the other way.

The incident was right in front of me, and for me, if given it would have been a soft one.
