League games against Oldham commenced in the early 60s and we have played them pretty regularly since. We hold a clear lead with 16 wins to their 12 with 10 draws. Somewhat unusually, including the 3 Cup matches there have been more away wins than home in those 41 matches.

Man in charge is the somewhat onomatopoeically named Adrian Quelch from Christchurch, a Business Development Manager (i.e. salesman) for a Bodmin-based company specialising in “innovative glass balustrade solutions”.

This is his seventh season refereeing at National League level and over those seasons he has refereed 110 matches producing 393 yellow cards and 14 reds – a bit high but nothing out of the ordinary there. I have actually seen him a few times at places like Billericay, obviously recalling the name, and he was okay. Like most referees at this level, he does plenty of PL2 development matches and a bit of league Fourth Officiating. Having said that I don’t think he was totally convincing in his first visit to Roots Hall last season for the match against Aldershot when we were even less convincing. Our only yellow amongst the 6 shown went to Dunne. His second visit was for the Yeovil home match, a home midweek victory by 2-1. We won the bookings too; Lopata, Demetriou and Neal to their one. Again, he wasn’t very good but at least we played well and won, despite injuries picked up in the game.

He’s just done the one match this season – Tuesday night’s game between Woking and Scunthorpe (4 yellows).

Assisting will be Robert Evans from Northampton who refereed our FA Youth Cup tie at Barton Rovers 7 years ago and did a couple of lines for us last season. The rest of the team are new to Southend (and to me) – other Assistant is Larentiu Hantea, a Service Engineer from Biggleswade. The Fourth Official is Londoner, Deryll David who is Referee Development Officer for London FA. and was given a mid-season promotion back in January.
