Our six matches against Solihull have got gradually better. We started off with one defeat, followed by two draws, which were in turn followed by three excellent wins during which we scored 11 goals without reply.
Saturday’s match will be refereed by Stephen Parkinson from Watford, a former teacher of German who now works in health and well-being. This is his second season at this level and he has already been given several Football League matches.
He has refereed us three times before, all at Roots Hall last season. Firstly, our home victory over Maidenhead on the night of the rats. He had a good match and there was a yellow card apiece, ours going to Demetriou. Then he took charge of the excellent win over Chesterfield in November when I again thought he had a reasonable match. Just one yellow card for them.
Most recently he filled in as a late replacement in our shocking match against Wealdstone. A 1-1 draw thanks to a Sandat goal right at the very end. He did far better than either team in a game of 5 yellow cards – our two going to Miley and Hussin.
I said in the notes before that Wealdstone match “He has more chance than us of being promoted to the Football League next season” and I think it’s fair to assume that, had it not been for the pooling of referees, he would have been. Of his 5 matches this season 4 have been at Football League level and just one National League. These games have seen 18 yellows and 2 reds, the reds both coming in his last game, at Newport.
Assisting will be Callum Gough from Barnsley who works for the PGMOL and has done for 5 years. This is the company which manages all the professional referees in the Premier League and Championship and he is now a Senior Match Analyst. Before that he was involved in Performance Analysis at Bradford City and Leeds United. The other assistant is the excellently named Wayne Gray from Nottinghamshire. Fourth Official is Harley McKittrick making the short journey from Coventry.
