This match is being staged as a "test event" by Stevenage with a maximum of 1,500 supporters and is available for all their season ticket holders.

The identity of the referee has been revealed. It is Declan Bourne from Nottingham. Whether we are able to maintain our league supremacy over Stevenage remains to be seen.

He is in his first season as a League referee and has not refereed either Southend or Stevenage previously. He works in the police force having achieved a MA in Criminology from Nottingham Trent University.

He has taken charge of 12 matches thus far in his League career and his cautions are a shade above average at 41 and just the one red card. Statistically improbable but he has had just 2 home wins in those 12 matches - perhaps a reflection of dimishing home advantage without crowds.

Assisting will be Kevin Howick from Abingdon and Scott Williams, a Londoner. The latter is also in his first season.

Conversely, Fourth Official is the very experienced League referee Kevin Johnson who has refereed Southend 13 times, most recently in the behind closed doors match at home to Exeter.

I'm not sure I would call that a shade over average. You seem to work on the average being around 3 yellows per match. (Four would mean he's below average!) That means in 12 games you'd expect about 36 yellows, which means he's 5 over average, or nearly 14% over. If he was only 5 over average at the end of the season then I'd say he's a shade over, but after only 12 games...I'm not so sure. Hopefully that will work in our favour.

Of far more interest than the semantics of the word "shade", some stats (not quite up to date):

Yellow cards running at 2.93 per match. Red cards, incidentally, are one every nine matches.

However our referees also referee League One where the average is higher at 3.23, so overall their average is just a shade below 3.1 yellow cards per game.

Hadn't read this beforehand, not surprised this is his first season, he did seem a little naive.
