National League matches against Wealdstone have mainly featured lots of cards and few goals. The six matches have seen three Southend victories, two draws and one defeat with 30 cards shown and just 10 goals.
Tuesday’s match will be refereed by Andrew Humphries who is in his second season at National League level. He is a teacher from Daventry and shouldn’t be found wanting for fitness, having once completed 11 marathons in 11 days raising money for MS research.
His first previous Southend match was the home game against Eastleigh, last season, on a Friday night in August – the night of the tennis ball protest. We won 2-0 with cautions for Miley and one of theirs. I thought he had a very reasonable match.
His other Southend match was later last season at Oldham. A 1-1 draw in goals and a 1-1 draw in cards too; Hobson for them, Cardwell for us. He seemed to miss a clear penalty during that game.
He has done just three National League matches so far this season, including one of Braintree's several 0-0 draws, with just 6 yellows and a red. His first ever National League match was at Wealdstone just over a year ago when they beat York.
Assisting will be Conor Farrell from Hampshire and Thomas Whay, a Quality Assurance Officer from Harlow. Standing by as Fourth Official, making his Southend debut, is Daniel Bonneywell from Herne Bay.
