National League matches against Wealdstone have mainly featured lots of cards and few goals. The seven matches have seen three Southend victories, three draws and just one defeat with 34 cards shown and just 12 goals.
This rather important, televised match will be refereed by Stephen Parkinson from Watford, a former teacher of German who now works in health and well-being. This is just his second season at this level and he has already been given plenty of Football League matches so he is highly thought of by the appointment people.
He has refereed us five times before, most recently at Woking this season. A 0-0 draw with a red card for Miley and yellows for Ralph and 3 of theirs, including Kendall.
Prior to that, back in September this season he did the game at Solihull. A 4-2 win, 3 yellow cards (Gus, Ralph and Bonne) for us and two for them.
The previous three were all at Roots Hall last season. Firstly, our home victory over Maidenhead on the night of the rats. He had a good match and there was a yellow card apiece, ours going to Demetriou. Then he took charge of the excellent win over Chesterfield in November when I again thought he had a reasonable match. Just one yellow card for them.
Later last season, he filled in as a late replacement in our shocking match against Wealdstone just over a year ago. A 1-1 draw thanks to a Sandat goal right at the very end. He did far better than either team in a game of 5 yellow cards – our two going to Miley and Husin.
I said in the notes before that Wealdstone match “He has more chance than us of being promoted to the Football League next season” and I think it’s fair to assume that, even if it had not been for the pooling of referees, he would have been.
Of his 25 matches this season 14 have been at Football League level and, in total, these games have seen 85 yellows and 6 reds. His last match was goalless between Fleetwood and Barrow on Good Friday.
The two Assistants are Dan Bonneywell from Herne Bay (whose only other Southend appointment was the away match at Wealdstone earlier this season) and Andrew Hickman from Harrow, a member of the Harrow Symphony Orchestra. Fourth Official is Alan Cresswell, also from Harrow.
They may consider that two officials from a place so close to Wealdstone that it shares a railway station is too many and make a change, especially with the referee also being from nearby.
