REGGIE Bourne-Reeves was handed a welcome surprise by Southend United boss Kevin Maher at Roots Hall on Saturday.
The football mad seven-year-old headed to the National League clash with Maidenhead United expecting to head straight to the stands alongside his parents Louis and Nia.
But, upon arrival, Reggie was greeted by the Shrimpers head coach who told him he would be leading out the team.
And it made for an unforgettable day for his family who all live in Southend.
“We kept the entire day a secret from Reggie, right up until Kevin Maher broke the news to him in person he would be leading the Shrimpers out,” said Reggie’s dad Louis.
“Seeing his eyes light up with excitement as he cheered just made keeping this a secret from him all the more worth it.”
Reggie was chosen as mascot due to Saturday’s game being the Shrimpers’ match for Mind this season. The youngster regularly supports matches played by Run Free United, a football team made up of individuals who have experienced mental health issues, who are captained by his dad.
Reggie’s grandfather Brian also took his own life three years ago and that gave Saturday’s match extra meaning for his family.
Louis added:” Reggie knows how important Run Free and Mind is for me, so much so that he actually supports Run Free as his team and loves getting involved in any kind of way with the fundraisers.
“He loved the fact he could walk out with the players specifically in this game as he knew this game had a bigger message than just football.”
And even the result, a 2-0 defeat for the Shrimpers, could not ruin Reggie’s day.
“Southend United, Run Free and Mind gave my boy and me a day we will always cherish for as long as we can remember,” said Louis.
“I am forever grateful to be associated with all three of those amazing communities.”
The Shrimpers’ squad warmed up for Saturday’s game wearing SECE Mind branded t-shirts while a 5km run took place before the game to also boost the charity.
Blues boss Maher joined chairman Justin Rees and fans by running round the sides of the Roots Hall pitch. And he was also pleased to play his part in Reggie’s day.
“It was brilliant to meet Reggie and his reaction to finding out he was mascot really made me smile,” said Maher.
“I really hope he enjoyed his day and wish him and his family all the very best.”
