I have a birthday coming up and was hoping to celebrate it in style with a few friends going for one of these Blues Lounge packages at one of the home games either side of the big day, which would be Leyton Orient or Leeds. But then Essex Police go and spoil everything by moving the games to Friday night, meaning we can't all get there! :madman::madman: Less money in the coffers of the club, then....

Anyway, out of those original plans we've thought that we should still get together in Southend and go out for a meal. Now, it's been so long since I've eaten out in Southend that I just don't know where is a good place to go.

It is possible that we'll be staying in the Leigh area, but the restaurant doesn't have to be confined to that area necessarily.

So, where would you suggest as a good place to go for some good food with a few friends in the Southend area? Would be grateful for your suggestions.

The Dining Room, London Road, Leigh. (Fine dining)
Toulouse on the seafront at Chalkwell. (Fine Dining)
The Boatyard, Leigh old town. (Fine seafood dining)
Ocean Beach on the seafront at Thorpe Bay. (Mid-range, nice views)
La Tasca or Ortega's, Southend Town Centre. (Mid-range, Tapas)
Charlie Choy's, Southend Town Centre. (Multi-national buffet stylee)
Pancho's London Road, Westcliff (Lively party type venue)

Have you been in the Blues Lounge before out of interest? I'd recommend a Chinese all you can eat. Wok 'N' Grill by the Varsity Cafe opposite Warriors Square is pretty good and cheap. £7.50pp and £1.30 for drinks.

I've not been in the Blues Lounge before. It was one of those things I'd always told myself I'd do for a special occasion, so I'm not happy with PC Plod. I still quite fancy trying it some time before we leave the Hall.

Now, I like food from all over the world, but I have to say Chinese is one I'm not really that keen on. Sorry, Shrimper. :'(

Thanks for the suggestions so far, guys. Any more gratefully received and I'll then try and pick one.

One already suggested The Boatyard in Leigh is excellent if somewhat pricey.

The Royal Thai in Benfleet
Alvarros Portuguese) in St Helens Road Westcliff
The Tandoori Parlour in Thundersley
The Masa in Hadleigh, although I am told that standards have slipped recently
The Fish House. ;)

to contradict what Smiffy said, if you want decent Tapas, dont go to La Tasca.

There's a nice tapas restaurant in Hadleigh, next to where the Land Rover garage used to be.

Ian, can I put in a word for Affinity which is right near Thames Drive junction on the A13 (used to be Pescadors I think) - pretty reasonable prices too. Plus there's the Grove in Leigh at the top of Belton Way. Both are decent bistro type menus. Bit further out my way there's the Woodmans (formerly the Woodmans Arms) on the A129 between Rayleigh and Hadleigh.

If there is a few of you and a bit rowdy, somewhere like Paparazzi down Hamlet court road might be best, Food isn't michelin star but still very good and they don't mind you having a laugh and joke. Also you have the bar downstairs at the back of the Thai for afters!!!!

A few that have been mentioned previously Paparazzi and Alvarro's are two favourites of mine. If your in the Leigh area Simply Blues isnt a bad shout if your after some american type dining.

My specialist subject...

In no particular order, and depends upon your budget:

Zabrano, Leigh
Rococo, Leigh
The Bank, Leigh
Sand Bar, Leigh
The Dining Rooms. Leigh
The Mews, Southend
San Farie Ann, Southend
Sands, Southend
Toulose, Southend
Pipe of Port, Southend
Azzuro, Southend

Would happily go to any of those.

have fun.
