Surely if you were serious about buying a football club as a hobby rather then to make money, wouldn't it more of an achievement to buy a smaller club, build a team up from scratch, possibly invest in a new stadium and completely transform a non-league club say forest green rovers into a champions league dream team?

This isn't Football Manager.

Abramovich has been at Chelsea how many years and spent how much money? And he still hasn't won the Champions League... Tell me, how many years do you reckon it would be to take a non league team with non league facilities with non league aspirations?

Decades. with in excess of £1bn.

In theory 6 years. In reality it just won't happen.
We've seen the likes of Dave Whelan & John Madejski take comparable clubs like Southend to the Premier League without threatening to qualify for Europe. Since Reading have slipped back, and Wigan are spending millions to stay out of the bottom three.

Jack Walkers millions helped take Blackburn to the Champions League but they never had a sniff at winning it.

There is a one-word answer which shows that this is complete folly for the club, the owner and the players:

Gretna.

Espescially if he bought Southend. Can you imagine Shrimperzone? "Where is this so called warchest Sheikh Ron Martin has promised us? We have only signed Robinhio and Kaka".
