Rioting - discuss

Awesome stuff!

Any one got any links to the people sent down today? Heard on BBC but not anything in text yet. They suggested people were getting banged up for 10 years...

Something they should definitely do is to put these prisoners in the farthest prison away from their hometown. Make it very hard for their mates and family to visit.

Agreed.. Liked the dialogue from Traffic Cops the other week as the offender had been nicked and was in the Police car :-

Officer: I will be taking you to Luton where you will then be transferred to Dunstable for processing
Criminal: DUNSTABLE!! How do I get home from there ?
Officer: Do you have shoes on ?
Criminal: er, yes !
Officer: Good, you can walk (smirk)

I suggest the Ark Royal, with it's anchor dropped around Cape Horn

Saw that too! Most of the trouble seems to have headed North last night, which was only to be expected really and certainly nothing to do with Duggan's death, just copycat opportunism, wanton destruction and deliberate targetting of high value goods.

There was trouble at Feltham last night, but it was very quickly brought under control by the officers so may not even make the news. I believe special courts are running outside of normal times and the prisons in London are remaining open through the night so that people being processed may be taken in at any time rather than staying in police cells.

Rather than prison, I'd like to see a lot of these people doing long stretches of community service, hopefully making it as humiliating as possible. I'm thinking bright orange bibs with "I'm a vandal and thief" writ large across their backs and tasks such as clearing up dog crap, cleaning chewing gum off the floor, picking up litter from the side of very busy roads, etc.

But that will impinge on the poor dears human rights.

Nice idea, but I would propose one slight amendment - pink boiler suits.

Sounds like bull, on the news they said the ones who pleaded guilty have been referred to the crown courts for sentencing, for some reason the Judges didn't want to do the sentencing themselves:stunned:

Saw on tv that the County Court judges referred the cases to the Crown Court as they felt they didn't have adequate sentancing powers to deal with rioters - they could only sentance up to 6 months for burglary - wheras the Crown Court will be able to sentance up to 10 years.

In Manchester a lot of the rioting has moved to the Northern Quarter. For people who don't know Manc, that's the main 'indie' area with lots of independent shops, bars and restaurants. It'll be absolutely devestating for the area, these aren't chains or big business, peoples livelihoods will be destroyed :'(

Did you hear about the [PIAS] warehouse going up in the fires on Monday night Pubey? They distribute for alot of small indie record labels and all the stock is gone. Devastating for small record labels which are already struggling because of the internet.

bloody immigrants coming over here, defending our communities.

hundreds of sikhs defending their temple in southall.

They were defending the local community aswell as the temple.

Also regarding Eltham being guarded by Milwall fans, there were rumours that it was the EDL but there are some good tweeters from Eltham - one in particular who lives on the high st - that said there were people from milwall, possibly EDL and just local people of all races & religions defending the area which to me is fantastic.

Yes I did, dreadful news.

Or build more under lying resentment that will explode 5-10 years down the line... again.

Amazing how most people talk about short term fixes (imprisonment , separation , humiliation) that have been used and have continuously producded after time the same sort of idiots who have performed these riots (what makes it worse is the instant communication and that everyone can see it quicker then before ). Yet oddly very few ideas of using each and everyone of these methods together maybe , also along with helping to rebuild communities (like the Turkish people who defended their home , the solidarity of the people in Oslo (i use these as comparisons of social togetherness not to equat the events )). I heard on 5 live just now 2 people different backgrounds one a foster/adopter who also worked in teh prision system the other an ex teacher who became a copper and they both agree it was a break down of community . People (and someone else mention across all strata of society ))are individuals , people who acquired money who stole (from MP,s and Bankers, to the foot soldiers of local gangs ) were never seen to be punished , and as a whole everyone had failed . Not blacks not whites , or the people of the left or the right.... everyone .

The social voids created that made the parents or grandparents of these kid's the poor parents , teh ethics that drive people to put everything they are into an occupation and to neglect their own family and communities , the people who nick stuff from their office because no one will notice , the employers who wilfully manipulate their staff and the rules and ignore the social consequences , the socialists who blindly believe in their own version of what socitiy is and reject any new generations etc etc etc .

Somebody tried to burn down the Nelson pub yesterday (Page 7 todays Echo). After seeing pictures of burning buildings on TV I think there may be an increase in arson not associated with rioting as such, but just individuals or small groups out to cause trouble.

Just seen on same page of todays Echo that a temporary stage will be unveiled in Cluny Square which will host a month long series of community events. It will be interesting to see how that works out because in days gone by the 'Cluny Loonies' would have smashed the stage up after a couple of days.

Regardless of what lessons we as a society take from this and what changes need to be made to make sure this doesn't happen again, there needs to be swift and strong justice brought against those arrested, if for no other reason than to show people that these actions do have repercussions.

I was asked today in my local builders merchants if it was all the arabs rioting but alas i didnt know the french words for chav scum.
