Robbie Savage at FGR

barton west

Striker
Long article in the Guardian online today. Savage has signed a four year contract and plans to take them into the Championship. Wonder how long he’ll last.

and yet - the statement from Macclesfield is very positive.

Macclesfield FC can confirm that Robbie Savage has accepted the role of First Team Manager at Enterprise National League side, Forest Green Rovers.

Whereas we cannot hide the fact that this is disappointing, Robbie leaves with our very best wishes and eternal gratitude for everything that he has done for our Football Club over the course of the last five years.

On and off the pitch, Robbie has led by example – with his passion, desire and work rate not only unparalleled, but infectious in its nature.

Robbie has inspired us all to make Macclesfield FC the best it can be, and his role in creating the vibrant and inclusive Club that we see before us can never be exaggerated.

Firstly, as Director of Football and then as Head Coach, Robbie’s meticulous and unwavering work ethic helped ensure that Macclesfield once again had a Football Club everyone could be proud of.

Masterminding a truly historic campaign last season, Robbie’s side broke almost every record going as The Silkmen tore up the history books almost at a canter.

And yet, all the trophies and accolades somewhat pale into insignificance when it comes to how Robbie engaged with all those who hold this Club so dear.

Robbie helped make people believe what is possible and how the “impossible” can be achieved by a ruthless and relentless mindset.

This is the overriding legacy that Robbie leaves us with, both collectively and individually.

As we embark on a new era, this cannot and will not be lost, as we set our sights on taking our wonderful Football Club forward once more.

Until recently Robbie Savage owned 11% of Macclesfield and was on the board of directors (he's now had to sell to take the Forest Green job). Whether he was a good manager or not he was always going to get a nice statement because he's part of the reason the phoenix club exists.

Actually, listening to recent interview about his time there, he came across as exceptionally humble and grounded. Personally, I love Marmite and football needs characters.

I’m interested to see how they do. Hopefully at least one spot below us.

Far too many people base their opinion of Savage on what they’ve read in the media. Well guess what,he was no footballing superstar but he was still a great player, confirmed by his stats (not that he has medals to show for it).

Passionate for sure and sometimes misguided but guess what? Sent of twice in his career and one of those was a second yellow. Known as a great trainer and respected by most of his fellow pros. Certainly didn’t take the Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney route into management and what he achieved with Macclesfield is no mean feat. I suspect he’ll be able to strengthen the squad even further. I’m in no doubt he will do well next season.

It was a long time ago but I can remember seeing him in a pre.match kick about at QPR deliberaly goading the Fulham fans behind the goal by shooting high ,wide & handsome at them rather than at the goal. :Winking:
