Ron Update on Manager Search

“This is an update on the managerial appointment.
Firstly, we all recognise that this is an important appointment but then again every time the club changes Manager it’s an important decision. Keeping stability in the club whilst we make that transition is also crucial.
I said when Kevin Bond departed that there would be no ‘knee jerk’ reactions and his replacement wouldn’t be instantaneous. We know the qualities within the manager that we are looking for but the combination of those characteristics or persons are not always available and its right we carry out, as we are, proper DD in arriving at the right choice.

Henrik Larsson is obviously one of the individuals that we have been interviewing but he is not the only candidate and no decision has been made as I write this statement. I am going to Stockholm in the morning, back in the afternoon, to meet potential ‘back room staff’… but that’s it, gathering information.
There are five shortlisted candidates and Gary Waddock is certainly included. It’s sometimes difficult for the assistant to step into the shoes of the manager but in this instance Gary has had very considerable experience (a great deal more than Kevin Bond in management) and he is well-placed to stamp his authority. I maintain we have a good squad of very capable players but they need direction and certainty too.
It’s my wish to get through this process this week but I have to be clear that in making that decision I have more than one eye on the future in my aspirations for our club. This has been a factor as to why I have looked further afield than some of the merry-go-round of English managers.
In writing this short note I just want to assure supporters of the club that we are absolutely ‘on it’ and recognise the sooner we can galvanise the players, through stability, then the better off we will be and I am confident that results will improve. I hear you say that’s not difficult because we have been losing so many matches… I agree and I am as miserable about that as you are.
However, whatever decision we make will not please everybody for I thought that Chris Powell’s appointment was a good step but a manager’s head is always likely to roll if we keep losing. As I have said previously, it is not the Southend way to immediately react and sack a manager, we are better than that, but ultimately winning is what it’s all about.
Hopefully, this side of the weekend I will be able to update you again and maybe confirm an appointment also.
In closing, please bear with me, no one is delaying for any reason and we all want a settled club.
Up the Blues.”

Sees a reasoned and as detailed a response as we can reasonably expect.

Larsson
Waddock
Plus 3 others shortlisted

A few clues perhaps..

First he is flying out to Stockholm in the morning to meet potential backroom staff. Begs the question would he being going to meet proposed backroom staff unless Larsson was not in a very strong position? Larsson has his own proposed back room team and they are also Swedish.

He mentions he doesn't expect to please everyone whilst mentioning Chris Powell- this to me hints again that it is likely not to be AB.

GW I can't really decide on the comments and of course in the meantime he needs to be 'onside'

He mentions the merry-go-round of English managers- doesn't sound like he is looking for someone with a long managerial CV having been around multiple clubs.

We have no idea who the other 3 are and without that its very difficult to know who will come out on top.

.

I read that as he is back in the uk in the afternoon to interview back room staff, but it’s very poorly written and ambiguous.

My read, is that as part of Ron's "information gathering" process he is interviewing the back room staff of all five shortlisted candidates.

The comma after afternoon means the sentence is absolutely clear that he is meeting potential back room staff in Stockholm. For it to mean he is meeting potential back room staff back here the comma would need to be a mistake. Its more logical to assume its correct as written, than assume the comma is a mistake and it means something else.

I wonder who the others are on the shortlist. Blimey, it’s as if Ron reads SZ ... I’m happy for him to take his time, not rush into an appointment.. and look, whether I agree with it or not I’ll be behind the new man. I hope everyone is, as RH needs to be rocking .. we need to believe even if some of this lot don’t appear to.

Off to Stockholm to meet "potential backroom Staff".

That suggests to me that we have the money/contract clauses in place,so that if the new manager wants his own team in, he is going to be able to do that.

Perhaps Sven is going to provide the experience to back up HL!!!

Don't comment on that above line, it's a bit of fun,

Seriously though, up to 5 candidates, not looking at the normal merry go round of English managers, looking further afield.

There are 2 obvious, HL and GW, then the remainder we may be unaware of. Reading between the lines, I would also suggest that if it isn't GW, then he is toast.

Stephen Reid would fit that description, as indeed would AB, well the merry go round bit, not sure about the distance, Millwall hardly being further afield.

Maybe another Scandanavian candidate and HL might be doing the DD for him, could be another scenario?

The last member of backroom staff who came from Swedish football, was (and I am fully prepared to be corrected), Bobby Houghton, the so called "dream ticket" bought in by Vic Jobson as assistant to Colin Murphy and we all know how long that lasted. We cannot afford another failure along the lines of what those two concocted.

On the whole, I think this update has made me more nervous than I was before

And that it absolutely doesn't say?
There was me thinking the statement brought clarity - in fact we will probably have 100 pages of reinterpretations and it could mean whatever you want it to..
I don't know whether RM's grammar is great or not- the way he has written it has clear meaning, but if has no idea where to place commas etc. then you are quite right it could mean something entirely different..

I agree the writing is ambiguous. I thought the Chairman was saying that he is returning from Sweden in the afternoon to interview back room staff!

:-) but why think the Chairman meant to say something different to what he has actually written, rather than assuming he actually meant to write exactly what he wrote? Surely that's more likely?

The more he talks up Waddock the more untenable his position becomes if he doesn't get the main job. No incoming manager will want to work with someone the chairman had been talking up as a candidate for the job - particularly when the previous manager lasted 6 league matches.

It's also weird how only two names have got out - I'm not convinced that Barrett is on the short-list. Why aren't the other 3 candidates at our games? Do we really think that all three are employed? That hasn't been Ron's style. Whilst I'm not convinced someone already being employed would be an absolute bar to Ron appointing them it seems unlikely that only one candidate (outside the inhouse one) would be free.

Finally, we seem to be publicly courting Larsson. He's been at two matches and been photographed with Ron and Mr Hi-Tec, now Ron is flying over to Sweden to interview his backroom staff. Why is this public but the other four candidates all done in private? Is this to put pressure on another candidate to drop their demands? And why is Ron flying to Sweden to interview backroom staff? Who'd dream of accepting a backroom job without visiting the place? Without seeing the facilities you'd have?

I was with you until you stated it was logical to assume it was correct. Haven't you read a Ron press release before?:Winking:

I still say Steven Reid fits into the description Ron is talking about, he also came down in the betting yesterday not massively, but I have had a gut feeling it could be him all the way.
A typical Ron Appointment. Although it does look like HL is going to be the man now, but I think Steven Reid is one of the others.

Tbh back room staff come to work for and with the manager so if its it good enough for him..what would be interesting is to know who they- not unimportant and may make this particular appointment (or let's say prospective appointment) more or less promising.
