Does anyone remember why he left us after our relegation to Division Two? Didn't he leave just before August?

He resigned on June 30th. Here is a report from the following day's Liverpool Echo:

RONNIE Whelan resigned as manager of Southend, blaming a lack of support from both the board and the club's fans for his decision.

Former star Whelan, 35, quit last night, after returning from holiday.

He said "It is something I had been thinking about for some time.

"The lack of cash for new players was one factor in my decision, as was the reaction of some of the fans at the end of the season who made it clear that I wasn't welcome.

"My one regret is that I couldn't prevent the club from being relegated to Division Two.

Whelan, who joined Southend as a player three years ago and took over as manager 12 months later, added "I want to stay in football and I shall sending off applications.

Southend chairman Vic Jobson said he was "surprised" by Whelan's resignation.

Then he took the club to the court!! To be honest, my mate told me, that he should have been sacked in December 1996, if they did, I think Southend would have stayed up.
