There can have been few better teams for us to visit in recent years. Since our last defeat there 37 years ago, we have won 5 and drawn 4 of our 9 matches at their various grounds. The last four visits have all been won, by an aggregate score of 13-3.

As we look to keep this impressive record going, man in charge is one of the League's youngest officials, 24 year old Michael Salisbury from Penwortham (which, of course, is near Preston) who has just started his second season as a League referee. He is the son of Graham Salisbury who has refereed Southend many times and who, on Saturday, will be doing the Oxford v Portsmouth match.

Mr Salisbury jnr is the Training Manager for The Preston Referees Society.

He has not previously refereed either Southend or Rotherham, although he was on the line at Accrington for our 1-1 draw four seasons ago.

His two matches thus far this season have produced just 3 yellow cards and no reds and his complete record at this level is 110 yellows and a highish 9 reds from 33 matches.

Assistants will be Andrew Newbold from Leicester and Peter Gooch from Wigan. Fourth Official duties will be performed by Michael Denton from Todmorden, West Yorkshire.

Is it me, or are a very high proportion of referees employed in referee related jobs?

No it's not you; an incredibly high number of officials appear to work for some County FA or other. Jobs for the boys ?

Do they get favourable treatment and promoted onto the List because of who they work for? Do they get the jobs because they're good at refereeing (unlikely in some cases)? Bit of both probably !

Mick, why does the EFL website not have a list of this weekends appointments?.

Is it all a big secret?.:winking:

4/10 Poor and looked completely out of his depth for the first 20 mins after which there was no match to referee.
