Win Butler (The Arcade Fire)

The Texan guitarist / singer / writer Win Butler relocated to Canada with his brother Will, met and married Haitian Regine and found 4 Canadians to form The Arcade Fire - now borderline stadium rock band status built on word of mouth. They get great reviews but no hype, popularity resulting from always exceeding expectations. A self released EP built enough of a fan base to sell out the London Astoria a couple of weeks before Rough Trade released the ‘Funeral’ album, the most ambitious song based indie album in memory. Friends told friends and new fans were created in time for the ‘Neon Bible’ warm up gigs – 3 in a Westminster church and 2 in Bloomsbury ballroom – sold out in seconds and on ebay for £150 minutes later. Two Brixton Academy dates sold out then Alexandra Palace and headline slots at Reading / Leeds Festival. The crowd never changes, just keeps getting added to as each person at gig 1 brings two people to gig 2 and they each bring two people to gig 3 and – its some kind of popularity pyramid selling. By ‘The Suburbs’ (after a keeping it real Hackney Empire show) they could sell out two nights at the O2 arena and then sell out Hyde Park. HYDE PARK – this doesn’t happen to ‘our’ bands.

Song writers love Win. Dear Mr Butler, love your music, heard about your exceptional gigs, can I please rock up to one of your shows and perform a song that you wrote with you? Love from Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, David Byrne, Bono (actually that was a cover).
So that’s my angle for round 1: knowledge of the band is a gift that people keep on giving to others, the live experience keeps on growing, and song writers fight to appear with the song writer. Win has to win.

I have done it for you this time but please read the last post in the "Problems forum" for an explanation on how to load Video's.

Cant see a win for Win.

The Bee Gees are legends, amazing harmonies, great songs, changing styles. 50 years in the business, I doubt anyone will be talking about Arcade Fire in 50 years time.

I own all (I think) Arcade Fire albums and rate them, but not a single Bee Gees track. They just remind me of hideous 70's discos and hen parties in Skegness for any number of Doris' drunk on cheap cocktails before throwing up in the gutter where they burst into tears.

I have to agree with the honourable CB here..The Bee Gees have been outstanding over the years not just for their own music but the songs and hits they also wrote for the likes of Barbara Streisand-Diana Ross-Kenny Rodgers and the multitude of hits from SNF etc etc.

Let's just look at some of the music that the Gibbs have written for other great artists, before embarking on a journey through the unfettered genius that is 'The Bee Gees'.

From Dolly to Kenny to Babs to Diana - they all knew that the Gibbs knew their onions.

Arcade Fire are the best new band to emerge in the last 10 years, and Win Butler is the best songwriter to emerge in the last 10 years. Musically and lyrically his songs are stunning, and AF are the only band to get me excited in this dire age for music when I generally couldn't care less about contemporary bands. Top 4 Win Butler moments;

Neighbourhood #2 (Laika);
Our older brother bit by a Vampire
For a year we caught his tears in a cup
And now we're gonna make him drink it
Come on Alex don't die or dry up!

The Suburbs;
So can you understand, why I want a daughter while I'm still young
I wanna hold her hand and show her some beauty before this damage is done
But if it's too much to ask, if it's too much to ask, then send me a son

Intervention;
Working for the church while your family dies
You take what they give you and you keep it inside
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan "We'll go at it alone"

Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels);
Then, we tried to name our babies,
But we forgot all the names that, the names we used to know
But sometimes, we remember our bedrooms and our parent's bedrooms
And the bedrooms of our friends
Then we think of our parents - well, whatever happened to them?!

I'm a little confused as to how Arcade Fire's numerous cover versions and a row with some slap headed has-been have any bearing on who wrote the best songs?

Take a deep breath and count to 10. Now, it constantly amazes me that a band as good as the Arcade Fire are as popular as they are because 1) they are good, and that rarely equates to popularity, and 2) they manage it on very little publicity. So, I was aware that some here may not be aware of their work and will be missing out. The fact The Boss, Bowie, Byrne, etc want to perform Arcade Fire songs is a testament to the song writing, but for those who need an extra angle to be bothered to hit play on the video I mentioned cover versions they have performed so that people who are into New Order, The Cure, The Clash etc may have their interest ignited and discover their new favourite band.
I had trouble with technology earlier so was having a practice and looked for the Bee Gees on youtube and this interview with Clive Anderson was there and I figured it would give a little insight to see them interviewed! It loaded up the video so the test was successful so we are all good.

I agree with you on this.

What is also pointless is showing videos.....You need lyrics.

Are people judging on a melody? No, they are judging on lyrics. To get more votes, I think that lyrics should be posted.

To be fair to the Gibbs I'd say that the tune to Staying Alive is a lot more impressive than 'you can tell by the way I do my walk, I'm a woman's man', but you can judge a song on the melody or the lyrics which ever is most important to you.

Supernaut has already posted a selection of Win Butler lyrics:
