Time for me to once more try to get Roy through to the Q/F's, though it's another tough draw.

Brian Wilson - Shrimpero v Roy Orbison - Cricko.

This is both an interesting and tough tie. I'm firmly on the fence until suitable evidence, or failing evidence a suitable bribe is received.

Tough draw this as they all seem to be at this stage, There really are so many Big O classics to choose from ,but here are a few of my favourites to kick things off.

Elvis Presley once stated that Roy had the greatest and most distinctive voice he had ever heard. While most men in rock and roll in the 1950s and 1960s portrayed a defiant masculinity, many of Orbison's songs instead conveyed a quiet, desperate vulnerability.

Said it before, not a fan of Roy Orbison, and as much as I think The Beach Boys are over-rated, BW still gets my vote.

A tough draw indeed, old chum, and I'm a big fan of 'The Big O' too. I liked what you said about the man's vulnerability and Jeez, how that wonderful voice conveyed that quiet but rising desperation too. Fantastic - a real one/off. Anyway, here's something about his opponent for today, the mighty Brian Wilson:-

Brian Wilson is a musical genius* and took popular music to a whole new level in the sixties. I know because my brother BarnaBlue played The Beach Boys all the time on the dansette in his room which was next door to mine. I love the stories about how The Beatles and Wilson tried to outvie each other in the mid-sixties with how far they could keep pushing the envelope. Wilson was inspired by 'Rubber Soul' to write the awesome 'Pet Sounds,'** an album I remember seeing in Barna's room back in the old house, but one that I did not get to know as a friend (rather than an invader) until 30 years later. Paul McCartney refers to 'God Only Knows' as his favourite song, but there are plenty of other gems on 'Pet Sounds' too - including the glorious opener 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' and the achingly beautiful 'Caroline, No.' A special word too for 'I Wasn't Made For These Times,' which I'm pretty sure that Brian (with Tony Asher) wrote for me.

The severe and enduring deterioration in Brian's mental health (in early 1967) prevented his completion of the 'Smile' album - with which he had hoped to answer 'Revolver' - until 2004, with his original collaborator, the lyricist Van Dyke Parks. It is a testament to Wilson's resilience that he came back through the looking glass to achieve this goal and it is highly impressive that he is still making music to this day with his 'reimaginations' of Gershwin, as recently performed at The Royal Festival Hall.

Brian Wilson is primarily my brother's choice that I'm representing here by proxy, but hey you gotta love the old guy for what he's given us. You'd have to be an individual of chronic curmudgeonliness not to be moved by those inspiring sixties sounds, a time when hope dreamed beyond the sun and fun of the beach.

*In 2000, Wilson was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Paul McCartney introduced Brian, referring to him as "one of the great American geniuses."

**Pet Sounds has been ranked as one of the most influential records in popular music, and has been ranked #1 on several music magazines' lists of the greatest albums of all time. It is ranked #2 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

I'm leaning towards Brian Wilson, but I am going to spend a happy afternoon listening to both, beats the crap out of working for a living.

The best voice is surely Al Green or Marvin Gaye, or Barry White?

I'd say Orbison was up there with those guys (and Aretha). I deliberately used the word 'lovely' rather than 'best' though as there was something beautiful about Orbison's voice which I can't quite put my finger on.

Poor Roy is getting bashed here....now I am taking note to gain my revenge later :smiles:
