Route 1

Route 1 is the most obvious tactic we need to use - it's not pretty but it's generally more effective at our level.

You have to look at the players at your disposal and play to your strengths. For the past year , when often we played Cox up front on his own , obviously route 1 was a stupid idea.

Now , we have Hopper back , and with our best midfield out injured with clumsy defenders with no confidence , poncing about with it , playing so deep so that we are constantly under pressure , its absolutely the wrong tactic. Of course , mix it up a bit , but we need to ping the ball about quickly and positively , get the oppo on the back foot .
Hopper , given the right service, is a proper good striker. Then Cox / Goodship / Rush can play off and around him and cause havoc at the other end of the pitch than where the current chaos is occurring.

It doesn’t matter what way of playing you have, you have to play it well to get results.

Playing direct football badly is as damaging as playing out from the back badly.

didnt work for us under Chirs Powell

U need a combination of both

True, but he didn't have Hopper for long. It won't work with Cox but it should work with Hopper and Goodship, and Ndukwu on the wing. Provided of course that the backs and midfield can hoof it upfield accurately!

Exactly. Played badly at this level route 1 means you constantly hoof it back to oppositions he can hurt you with it and in bite pressure. our defensive frailties won't get better by giving the opposition 50% more possession.

Whichever formation he plays at the moment he has to put some square pegs into round holes. PB would have us back to 352 at home and 451 away whilst still trying to play some football. Maybe that would work but Sol will be thinking if Macclesfield players on £500 a week can do it then these can too.

i was told by my fellow shrimper I sat with that by hoofing the ball it would only keep coming straight back. That as maybe but at least it would be in midfield and not in our six yard box thanks to out inept ability to play from the back. Yes I also appreciate we have no midfield but they might accidentally find one of ours as we sure can't !

Remember way back when we were going down under the management of Peter Taylor, things were not going to good.
Steve Thompson took over as manager and played Route 1 football, straight down the middle, running straight at there defence.

We went from 18th to 9th in the league, and Gary Jones who was quite an average player was suddenly terrifying the opponents defence, and was banging the goals in left, right and centre.
Sadly the following season Steve Thompson was poached by the big bright lights of Notts County.

Point being, we can still get out of this, play something out of the ordinary that opponents are not expecting, 4 up front, defence keeping a very high line, so all 10 players are all there abouts each other. Urrrhhhh.

Dont play from side to side, and then back to the keeper again. Urrhhhh.
If you are going to loose the ball, loose the bloody ball by attacking their goal, not because you lost the ball by doing a stupid back pass or what ever. Urrrhhhh !!!!!!

If we are to go down, lets do it by running forward and attacking,
not by running back or side to bloody side. Urrrrhhhh !!!!!!!

If you are going to go down, then go down fighting as if our life depended on it, not like a lilly pussy footed, what ever. Urrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!

Do you remember as kids in the play ground, all shouting FIGHT - FIGHT - FIGHT - FIGHT, and being all pumped up.

Maybe Sol should make our team all shout the same, to put some fire in the players belly before they kick the ball to get them all pumped and ready to win the game.
UUrrrrhhhhhh !!!!!!!

RANT OVER.

Route 1 worked for Oxford on Saturday. from the KO work a ball into the corner with a nervous young defender on debut and hope he makes a mistake and you catch a team cold.

The best bit was it was our KO......We very nearly did again from our second KO.

Steve Thompson had a shocking Tony Dorigo style demi-mullet and I was glad he left.

I wouldn't say Thompson played route 1, but what he did do was get the midfield to release the ball early and Thomson and Jones peeled off their markers and ran on to the through balls. Good example being the second goal here :-

That's because despite his size Humpreys is useless in the air, so playing it long just results in even more possession for the opposition, Hopper should be able to knock it down for a strike partner making it more effective.

Getting the ball forward early doesn't have to be route 1.

It just means not fannying about at the back. Just getting it into midfield quicker and pushing up to support.

I just want a glimpse of hope, really have no problem which route we take to achieve 3 points. If we go route 1, at least we cut out the powder puff midfield. At least perhaps it might get the crowd off their feet and involved in the game, everytime an opposing defender fails to deal with a ball over the top. We have strikers to cause problems and we do get ourselves in such a pickle at the moment trying to play it around.

How about that famous first goal by Freddy. The only thing that could happen in 7 seconds now, is we concede from our own KO.
