Maybe some Russian pilots decided to take their kids down to Cornwall during half term. It's a lovely time to go.

We have a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) fuelled and ready to deploy at short notice to divert them out of our airspace. They have often done this as reported a couple of weeks ago our Typhoons intercepted the Russian Bear aircraft out of the airspace their flight plan didn't dictate. It's not a show of force it's probably them trying to work out how quick our QRF can intercept them or where they get intercepted.

Although the cuts have massively deplited our armed forces, our QRF and what we have left are one of if not the best in the world. Don't forget we also have US Air Force bases in the UK that can also provide us support if an attack ever came to fruition.

till next year when their F16's leave Norfolk, and replace them with a Air Transport Wing :stunned:

I just heard a military expert on the radio say that if the worst comes to the worst we could easily deal with a few Russian bombers. But we couldn't deal with over a hundred of them. We don't have enough fighter jets, and time and fuel would be against us, and that's not even accounting for the accompanying Russian fighter jets. He said they could nuke us with ease. He also said that Russia is sending a warning in a typical Russian way of act and denial.

I seriously doubt whether Russia could financially afford a serious escalation in the stand off as it is now. International sanctions and the price of oil are having a serious impact on the countries finances and it's ability to pay it's way on the world stage and the west wouldn't hesitate to impose even harsher sanctions should they be deemed necessary.

Putin may be a megalomaniac with an ego the size of Siberia but he's not mad. He knows exactly how far he can take this. Sabre rattling to appease a very disgruntled and increasingly fed up (despite the polls which say he's never been more popular) population. Hence the very rear release of the video from inside the cockpit of the bomber recently escorted by two British Typhoons.

Michael Hesaltine suggests that Russia needs to re-a;ign its relationship with NATO; and the West needs to recognise that the real and present danger that could impact on both (West and Russia) is from the Islamic State and such areas which are either on the borders of Russia or Africa.
He has a point BUT it isn't likely to be a "vote" winner for Putin after the Afghan and Chechin experiences.

Well all I can say is that it's a good job that whoever comes to power after the next GE won't be putting our nuclear deterrent at risk. Oh hang on, isn't Salmond and Red Ed getting in bed together? You know, the bloke who wants to scrap Trident.

Not without getting some back right between their teeth.

Oh we'd put up a fight Tony, but their far superior in number fighter jets would keep ours busy, and probably over a third of their bombers would get through, and that would be that.

Scary figures there and they want to cut more of our armed forces!

Not much of a shock that we have a smaller army when compared to Russia. Shows how better funded our troops are compared to Russia that we have five times fewer personnel and ten times fewer vehicles but still spend 2/3rds as much.

Did anyone see Dispatches on Channel 4 at 7.30pm last night? It was all about our military might (Or lack of it). What a mess. At one incident with the Russian aircraft carrier, our men at the top asked local fishermen in fishing trawlers to keep an eye on the Russians as we couldn't get anyone there for a long time. A former military man more or less said it was laughable, but outrageous, can't remember his exact words. If we hadn't scrapped Nimrod 4 years ago, the maritime surveillance aircraft, then this wouldn't have happened.
Then they was asking a lot of our soldiers to go part time. What a joke. Our latest aircraft carrier was built far too big. They had an inquiry as to why and how this happened.
Well we certainly was a military might, but not now. Russia can bully us as much as they want now, whenever they feel like it. They are testing us out, and finding that we are now very weak indeed.

Worth watching on any sort of catch up TV, by the way.

Russia leasing long range bombers to the argies. Looks like they will be after the Falklands again, especially if the drilling for oil works it's meant to be highly profitable.

Anyone feel there is a definite creep towards WW3. Not felt like this since the mid 80s.

Was there a World War in the 80s?

Yes..look...

I'm sure our European and American allies will answer our call for assistance just like last time. Oh, wait a minute.............
