Quote[/b] (footymad13 @ June 06 2004,16:19)]My point is, the clubs around us that serve first, second and 3rd division footy seem to be generally cheaper than us.

So what do we provide that these others don't ?
So they're cheaper ... that's life, mate.

As for what the Club provides that others don't? You mean you don't know yet ... ? Maybe you ought to head to North London then ...

WS

I'm not quite clear on your point, MF, but I believe it's somewhere along the lines of Southend being particularly expensive.  WS has done a bit of research and come up with a list which seems to prove otherwise.

I, in turn, have looked at the clubs you have quoted (even though I fail to see why you include QPR and Brentford, clubs that will have no bearing on our gates - after all, casual fans won't think "That price is outrageous, right, I'm off to somewhere local like Griffin Park.").  These are all on their official sites.  I'd like to give you the links, but they're all through Premium TV so you have to log into every one.

Leyton Orient
As you say, prices are very reasonable. £40 for under 12s, £60 for under 16's, £80 for under 18s, £120 for senior citizens, £200 or £250 for adults depending on whether it's terrace or seating.

This price, however, is only available for existing season ticket holders due to ground reconstruction.  New enquiries will have to pay a more expensive £400 minimum.

Brentford
Adults are more expensive at £340.  Standing behind the goal is £260, still £10 dearer than our South Lower.  Students are £120 for seats, which isn't that big a difference, and £70 for standing. Juniors are £30, which is not that much difference from Southend's £25 on offer.  Matchday prices for adults are £17, whether standing or sitting.

QPR
Cheapeast seats for adults are £318, £190 for senior citizens and students and £177 for children.  Most expensive are a good 50% dearer.  As anyone who's travelled to Loftus Road knows, the seats are extremely cramped and uncomfortable.

Col Ewe
Adults are £331, concessions are £186.  Cheapest is £248 adults, £124 concessions.  There are also restricted view tickets for £207 but one of the goals is completely obscured.  Terracing is £269 for adults and £144 for concessions.  All this for a ramshackle ground with facilities only just passable for Isthmian League status.

In addition, I looked at the following local clubs, which might have more bearing on potential casual support.

West Ham
No season ticket prices yet issued.  Last season, though, the cheapest was adults £410, students and senior citizens £200, children £100.  Cheapest matchday tickets were adults £22, students and senior citizens £11, children £5.  Most expensive were around 50% dearer for adults and 100% dearer for all others.

Canvey Island
Adults - £250 seating, £210 standing.
Students / Senior citizens - £190 seating, £150 standing.
Children - £90 seating, £75 standing.
Matchday prices for adults will be £13 seating, £11 standing.

------------------------------

Looking through all that, considering the football, facilities, etc., I don't think Southend United fare too badly.

I got different prices than that, i was looking with the discount.

But a lot of the discounts - like ours and the one you mentioned at Sc**thorpe - have expired, which makes your point invalid.

I'm at the moment looking at the official websites of our 3rd Division rivals next season, which is surely a truer definition of how comparatively expensive or otherwise we are. I'm taking what a person what have to pay at this moment in time. It may mean they have discounts, it may mean not. It is simply a reflection of the price today.

Then I'm looking at the dearest and cheapest seats for adults, senior citizens, students and children, and adding up the total to gauge an average season ticket price price over the whole band of people that might buy one.

I'm about a third of the way through it and will put the findings on here but I can promise you already that Southend certainly aren't the 2nd most expensive in the 3rd Division.

Here we are then.  Faced with this or watching Hell's Kitchen, I've done the following research.

I've gone through the official websites of every 3rd Division club next season, as well as a few unofficial ones, to gauge season ticket prices for 2004 / 05.  I have taken the price of the most expensive and cheapest season ticket available to an adult, senior citizen, student and child.

I then totalled the amounts and got an average (dividing it by the 8 different categories I've researched).  These prices are as at today, which may or may not have a discount incentive attached to them still.

The 10 figures next to the clubs are adults dearest/cheapest, senior citizens oldest/cheapest, students oldest/cheapest, children oldest/cheapest, total for all 8 categories, then lastly average.

1st   Leyton Orient (250/200, 200/120, 80/80, 60/40, 1030 in total, 129 per tkt. average)

15th   Bristol Rovers (350/160, 280/45, 280/45, 280/45, 1485 in total, 186 per tkt. average)

19th   Wycombe (336/252, 252/160, 252/100, 160/35, 1547 in total, 193 per tkt. average)
20th   Shrewsbury (340/240, 220/140, 220/140, 220/140, 1660 in total, 208 per tkt. average)
21st   Cheltenham (315/260, 250/185, 250/185, 135/90, 1670 in total, 209 per tkt. average)
22nd   Rushden (357/294, 252/189, 252/189, 126/105, 1764 in total, 221 per tkt. average)

Grimsby and Boston did not have any any prices available online.

Although I've taken these figures from the official sites (except Swansea) I obviously can't vouch 100% for them, as they are open to any error of interpretation I may have made.

But it does appear as if Southend United aren't too bad at all, overall, as far as season ticket prices in our division are concerned.  Comparisons with our neighbours have also been gone into earlier in this thread.

Excellent piece of research, Mr Banned. As you know, I came to the same conclusion : SUFC is not as expensive as FM seems to think; it does seem to blow his theory clear of the water. However he's not going to respond because he "won't win this argument". But it's not about winning or losing. It's about getting the facts right and presenting a true picture.

But what that set of facts don't show is how much of the ground is priced. Most the home seating is charged at £305.

How many seats are in the south lower ?

Most of the home seating is charged at £305 and STILL cheaper than a lot of the home SEATING for other clubs. I don't see what you're trying to prove anymore. At least three people have already provided statistics that disproves your so-called "official" list (for which you have still not provided source reference). What are you trying to prove NOW?!

f**k knows how many seats in the South Lower; why?

Hate to break this to you, FM, but you appear to have a short memory. This appeared on page one of this now tiresome thread :

1. £414 - Sc**thorpe United
2. £400 - Bristol Rovers
3. £370 - Oxford United
4. £357 - Rushden & Diamonds
5. £350 - Macclesfield Town
6. £345 - Northampton Town
7. £340 - Shrewsbury Town
8. £340 - Southend United
9. £336 - Grimsby Town
10. £336 - Wycombe Wanderers
11. £331 - Kidderminster Harriers
12. £329 - Notts County
13. £320 - Mansfield Town
14. £315 - Cheltenham Town
15. £315 - Swansea City
16. £310 - Cambridge United
17. £310 - Lincoln City
18. £300 - Leyton Orient

That's EIGHTEEN clubs out of a division of 24 that offer most of their seating (in some cases their ONLY seating) for more than 300 quid.

Your point NOW is ... ?

WS

Oh, I just realised what SUFC offer to REAL potential season ticket buyers (from now on refered to as RPSTBs).

RPSTBs are already regular supporters at The Hall, or intend being. This eliminates any new fans we hope to attract on a one-off basis... although these could become RPSTBs in coming seasons.

What the club offer, that other clubs don't, to RPSTBs... by their very definition... and by each club's definition... is a team called SOUTHEND UNITED!

Doh!

As for 'floating supporters' (potential RPSTBs of the future), the club offer local professional football within their community.

at our level, community is something that needs to be exploited... and the commercial department is working on the very strategy.

Oh, BTW... note to Spread Eagle:

Lower the prices of your pints NOW. There's a pub in West London that offers much better prices and your locals may change venue!

That's very true. We found a bar here that sold a pint for less than £2 so we sold up, moved here and support CD Jávea instead. Now I can see where FM is coming from ... !

But most of them prices are just for one stand i.e the main stand in most cases. Where as we charge £340 for most of the seats in the ground.
