The referee in charge of tomorrow's match is ninth year official, James Adcock a 34 year old former PE teacher from Long Eaton in Nottinghamshire. In 2016/17 season he became part of the newly formed group of full-time professional referees to referee in the Football League, predominantly in the Championship. Unlike some, he was worth his selection. However more recently he has had an injury record to compare with even the worst of our players' injuries. The last two seasons have seen him referee just one match.
This will be his fifth Southend match and all of the previous four were at Roots Hall.
The first one was what we hoped would be the final match of the season 2011/12 against Macclesfield at home. We won and he cautioned Timlin and a couple of theirs.
Slightly more recently, he refereed 2012/13's dire 0-0 against York. He did rather well and there were no cards.
Then, a match which will be better remembered, our 4-1 Cup win against Millwall in 2013/14 when, again, he did rather well. Three cautions apiece and a red for them (White, Leonard and Atkinson were our yellows).
Finally, the match against Bradford City in 2015/16. A 1-0 home defeat with a yellow for McLaughlin and 3 of theirs.
He is recovering from his injuries in the lower Leagues with 6 matches so far and this will be his first mid-week match. Those 6 matches have seen a high 26 yellow and 2 red cards.
His assistants are Shaun Hudson from Houghton-le-Spring in County Durham and Akil Howson from Leicester. Rob Merchant from Stockton Brook in Staffordshire stands by as 4th official.
