Shrewsbury Town

Sam Ricketts talks to Shrewsbury Town’s OS about Tuesday evening’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Southend United at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Captain Ollie Norburn made his first league appearance in Saturday's one-all draw away at Wimbledon. Having played the majority of the game, Sam gives an update on how the captain is. “He’s okay, just trying to recover as much as he can with it being his first game for so long. I thought he played very well and physically looked good. Obviously, he was never going last the full game, but he gave as much as he could for as long as he could.”

A quick turnaround for Town as they are back on home soil Tuesday night. Ro-Shaun also made his return to the squad after a few weeks on the side-line with a knock. Ro-Shaun got a full 90 minutes under his belt. “I think it’s a big ask for them to go straight away again but we’ll have to see how they are in training and see if they’ve recovered well enough and if they are ready to go again.”

Dave Edwards wasn’t involved in Sunday’s game after he picked up a knock. “Hopefully Dave will be training today, so we can assess that and see where he’s up to. Everyone else is progressing pretty well to be fair and they’re not a million miles away hopefully.”

Debutant Jason Cummings made a fantastic impact on Saturday. Within five minutes of being on the pitch, Jason had scored the equalising goal after a great cross by Ryan Giles and secured the point for Town.

“we’ve got some real quality in the team and what we’ve got at the minute with Jason is where he’s at, making an impact off the bench and he certainly did that and it was a great start to his Shrewsbury career.”

Southend have struggled to get their season underway and are currently without a permanent manager. Sam thinks that it is a bad time to play Southend and he explained why. “They played Fleetwood at the weekend and drew three-all, I think it’s given the team a new lease of life going off their games and watching their games previously to this one.”

“They certainly played with a new exuberance and freedom to express themselves a little bit more and they went ahead in the game which is always a help. Fleetwood are a really good side and it turned out to be a good point for them with it being three all and scoring a late goal.”

It’s been a while since Town played on home soil, however they return to Montgomery Water Meadow Tuesday evening. “It’s been a while, so it’ll be good to get back and hopefully put a performance on and hopefully win the game as well.”

Southend United

Gary Waddock talks to the Southend United OS before travelling to Shrewsbury Town

Gary Waddock.jpg
Gary Waddock Southend United’s New Caretaker Manager

Caretaker manager Gary Waddock has called on Southend United to build on the point against Fleetwood Town when they face Sam Ricketts’ Shrewsbury Town tonight.

Blues travel to the 15th-placed Shrews where they haven’t won since a midweek game in Shropshire in 2016 when Stephen Hendrie netted a 79th minute winner.

And Waddock spoke on Monday about how the place has been given a lift after Blues secured their first point of the season.

On the atmosphere at the training ground…

Directly after the game everybody was pleased and they’ve taken that over into Monday morning and the training session, but we’re looking to build on that as I said after the game on Saturday. We’re in a positive frame of mind going into Tuesday.

On whether belief has been instilled…

Everybody wants to play like Man City but at this moment in time it’s about getting results and we need to do that, but we also need to be nice and solid. We need to have some way of playing to be able to do that. We’ve worked hard on that in the last week and obviously Monday morning again. We’ve gone through certain areas where we can go and hurt the opposition, also mindful of the fact that there’s areas that they will look to exploit and hurt us.

On Saturday being positive for everyone…

It was a great boost, but I also think the lads got a boost from the home support, I thought they were excellent and they stayed with the group even when things weren’t going so well. It was a great atmosphere around the place during the course of the game which I think gave the players a lift and then afterwards I think the home supporters saw the lads gave everything so that’s encouraging signs also.

On fielding sides for two games this week…

You want energy in the team. We rotated the group on Monday morning and we haven’t named the team, we will do that tomorrow when we have a presentation going into the game. Then make our mind up what we think is the best starting eleven for the game against Shrewsbury.

On Mark Milligan and Nathan Ralph …

Nathan’s done some work with the group so we’re waiting to see if there’s a reaction. For Milligan, he’s trained with Ben and done some work but again Saturday was too early, and I think this one will be too early as well. We don’t want to throw him back in, we want to wait till he’s 100 per cent right, so Saturday will be more realistic really.

On what he expects from Shrewsbury…

It’s going to be a tough game. They are a strong side and physically strong as well. We need to do better, they have some good players like Fleetwood had on Saturday but as I said going into that game, it’s about what we do and how we approach the game.

On how to limit the goals conceded…

It’s difficult but we just have to work hard on the training ground to try and put that right. The good thing from Saturday was we scored three so if we can look after the other end, and that’s not just the back line and the goalkeeper, it’s the whole team, then we will stand a good chance. We need to be more solid and compact, out of possession we need to do better.

Southend United bidding to stop defensive woes

Gary Waddock Shrewsbury Town.jpg
Gary Waddock Southend United’s New Caretaker Manager

Southend United will again be bidding to ease their defensive woes when they head to Shrewsbury Town tonight.

Blues conceded another three goals in Saturday’s draw with Fleetwood Town, meaning their defence has now been breached 20 times in just seven League One outings so far this season.

And the Shrimpers’ caretaker chief Gary Waddock is fully aware of the issue.

“It’s difficult but all you can do is keep working hard on it in training and that’s what we’ve been doing,” said Waddock.

“Everyone wants to try and play like Man City right now but at the moment for us it’s just about getting results and the points on board.

“We have to be solid for that to happen and we have to be better without the ball but that’s the whole group, not just the defence.

“The positive thing on Saturday was that we scored three goals and we’ve shown we can be a threat so if we can sort things at the other end of the pitch that bodes well.”

Shrewsbury’s home games have been short of goals this season with just one being scored in three outings.

The Shrews, who are 15th in the table, drew 1-1 at AFC Wimbledon at the weekend and will be looking to build on that against Blues.

However, the Shrimpers also secured a share of the spoils on Saturday and Waddock feels the team will be heading into the clash on a real high.

“Directly after the game everyone was on a high and that’s been taken into training now too which is great,” said Waddock.

“We’re looking to build on things and we’re in a positive frame of mind.”

The Big Preview

Shrewsbury Town vs Southend United

Shrewsbury Town v SUFC Big Preview.jpg

Overview

Southend United travel to Shropshire this evening looking to build on their first point of the season as they take on Shrewsbury Town at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.

The home of The Salop hasn’t been a happy hunting ground as of late for Southend with the last three visits by Blues resulting in three defeats and not a single goal being scored.

But with Southend now up and running in the league, it feels like there’s no time like the present for Blues to pick up their first away win against Shrewsbury since 2016.

Form

Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Fleetwood saw Southend pick up their first league point of the campaign and ended a run of six straight league defeats.

Blues’ miserable recent form had seen them lose eight of their last nine matches in all competitions prior to Saturday, but the weekend’s result is hopefully a sign that the tide is turning.

Shrewsbury have been in a sticky run of form themselves in recent weeks with Saturday’s draw with AFC Wimbledon extending their winless run in all competitions to five matches.

Last Meeting

Saturday 30th March 2019

Southend United 0-2 Shrewsbury Town

Okenabirhie 50’, Waterfall 69’

Ricky Duncan’s one game in caretaker charge of Southend United ended with a 2-0 defeat at home to Shrewsbury Town with goals from Fejiri Okenabirhie and Luke Waterfall the difference.

Okenabirhie got on the end of a one-two with Shaun Whalley to give the visitors the lead just after the interval before Waterfall nodded in James Bolton’s cross to secure Shrewsbury a vital away win.

Blues Team News

Gary Waddock is hopeful that full-back Nathan Ralph will be available for selection this evening after returning to training yesterday following a hamstring problem.

Should Ralph be available, he’ll be in the mix for selection along with Jason Demetriou who continued his return to full fitness by coming off the bench against Fleetwood at the weekend.

Midfielder Mark Milligan is also back in training after returning home from international duty with Australia early due to a hamstring injury, but he’s unlikely to be risked this evening.

Shrewsbury Dangerman

Striker Sam Cummings is arguably the one to keep an eye out for this evening having scored within five minutes of making his debut at the weekend against AFC Wimbledon.

The former Hibs frontman has had a difficult pre-season, meaning he’s had to wait patiently for his Shrewsbury debut but he quickly showed what he’s capable of in front of goal.

And should he feature against Southend tonight, the 24-year-old will no doubt be wanting to make a similar impact to the one he made on Saturday on what would be his home debut.

Ref Watch

James Adcock from Nottinghamshire will be tonight’s referee, being assisted by Shaun Hudson and Akil Howson with Robert Merchant acting as fourth official.

Adcock has overseen six games so far this season, showing 26 yellows and two reds, and most recently took charge of Gillingham’s 2-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

Tonight will be the first time Adcock has refereed a match involving Southend in over three years, last taking charge of Blues for a 1-0 home defeat to Bradford back in April 2016.

Hmmm, if he is using Goodship as a winger that is the perfect reason to not give Waddock the job full time!

Brandon Goodship on the ****ing wing again!!! Zero lessons learned. Days when we had a competent manager in charge who knows what he's doing seem like such a distant memory.

What choice does he have? Ndukwu has been shocking and Hutchinson is no more a winger than Goodship!!

If he plays 3 CB and wing backs he gets mullered for playing 5 at the back ?‍♂️

Gary Waddock makes two changes from Saturday...

Out: Blackman, Hutchinson

In: Ralph, Goodship

I prefer goodship there to Cox but I agree. Luckily Goodship played across all sides of a front 3 at Weymouth so at least it could be similar, when bond played cox wide it was like asking Humphrey’s to go in goal.

I would go 4-3-3 but then we are narrow as cox isn’t th best wide and neither is humphrys.

Just hoping cox finds his form and HUnphrys continues a she did on Saturday, rather than the lazy so and so the few weeks before.

Not digging him out, the whole team have been awful this season, not just Bond air one or two players. Doesn’t help when players played out of position but they all still need to put in 100% and fight for the cause

I’m sure if we gave Ndukwu a couple of games on the left he will produce the goods, but yet again we play players out of position, do we ever learn, Leicester must be thinking of calling him back in January if they have that option as he ain’t getting games with us, a draw at best for us tonight I think.

Dont see what he gives? He’s not that quick he hasn’t beaten a player yet and hasn’t had a shot or a cross since he’s been here.

On Saturday he gave width when he came on he stretched the defence. He needs a run of games to get some confidence

He looked mustard when he came on against Blackpool.

Exactly, the options are very limited. I'd like to see Demi get some time in a more forward role but that may happen depending on how things go.

Not sure why having a third forward on the pitch is such a crime. Especially one who has played on the wing in his time and actually scored this season.

Not as if he is on the wing with one up top. Brave selection from Wad and with McL that gives us goals, now lets see if we can stop a few.....Not miracles, just keep down to two would be a start.

I could give width!! Anyone can stand out wide. How often was he available to receive? how often did he get on the ball and find another blue shirt with it? How many shots? How many crosses? How many ball regains?
