John Askey talks pre Southend United game

Ths Gaffer looks ahead to Saturday's game against Southend

Shrewsbury Town face Southend United this Saturday in Town’s next Sky Bet League One fixture.

Askey’s men will be looking to build on their good performance last time out against Portsmouth, where Askey’s side drew 1-1.

Askey feels his side are still feeling confident ahead of Town’s fixture against Chris Powell’s men.

“The mood is pretty buoyant,” the Town boss told Shrewsweb. “We are looking forward to Saturday’s game.

“We can take plenty of confidence from the Portsmouth game.

“We would like to be in a higher position and we feel as though we have played well enough to get more points but we have to make it happen.

“We are going to put everything into Saturdays game and if we can replicate the performance and the finishing is better – then we have a great chance.

“We don’t seem to have had the rub of the green, but we have to make things happen ourselves. We aren’t looking for excuses, we have to be better and put games out of sight.”

Askey is expecting a tough test from the Shrimpers, but the Town manager feels his team have more than enough to get a result.

“They’re a good team,” Askey said. “They get goals, they tend to play 442 and every game we play is going to be tough.

“Southend are one of the better teams in the league, but we have to concentrate on ourselves as always. Hopefully we can dictate the game and come out on the right side.

“We need to keep the ball and create the chances that we have been creating. We are due to start putting our chances away, so hopefully that comes on Saturday.”

Chris Powell Interview with Chris Phillips of the Echo

Chris Powell wants better at the back for Southend United

Blues - who head to Shrewsbury Town tomorrow - have leaked 16 goals in nine games this season having conceded just 15 in their 18 outings under Powell at the end of last term.

And Powell is keen for the Shrimpers to get back to their best at the back.

“We’re a forward thinking team but maybe too much,” said the 49-year-old.

“We have to recognise we need to be better without the ball and with our decisions when we’re defending.

“We need to sense danger and that’s a big thing right now.

“I still believe in how we play and what our principles are but we just have to make sure we have that defensive mind in certain situations because we haven’t done that well enough so far.”

Just four teams in the whole of League One have conceded more goals than the Shrimpers this season.

And Powell wants Blues to maintain their concentration as they bid to bounce back from two successive League One defeats when they head to Shrewsbury tomorrow.

“The last two results have been tough to take but that’s gone now,” said Powell.

“We have to focus on the next game and that’s Shrewsbury.

“We have to go there and believe in ourselves and believe in what we’ve done well in games.

“Lapses in concentration, especially towards the end of games, have cost us.

“I’ve been very frank and very open with the players but we’ve had some good away performances this season and now we need another one.”

Shrewsbury have had their own struggles this season and have yet to win so far this term.

But Powell is taking nothing for granted against the new look Shrews, who narrowly missed out on automatic promotion last season.

“Shrewsbury are adapting to a new manager but it was a good point at Portsmouth for them last weekend,” said Powell.

“They have a way of playing and it’s up to us to try and overcome that.

“I know the stats with regards to wins, draws and losses but you can never call it in League One.

“It’s all about what happens on the day and we will need a sturdy away performance to win there because they’re starting to pick up.”

Blues head into tomorrow’s game sitting 16th in the League One table, with Shrewsbury in 22nd.

Chris Powell Interview with OS

Chris Powell wants an improvement in concentration levels when Southend travel to Shrewsbury this weekend.

Blues have conceded late goals at home to Charlton and Peterborough in their previous two Sky Bet League One games which have cost them a point in each.

Although chances are being created, Powell says ‘lapses of concentration’ must be eradicated.

“The two results have been tough to take, but being realistic they have happened and we can’t do anything about them now,” said Powell.

“All we have to do is concentrate on the next game, which is Shrewsbury.

“We have to go there believing in ourselves and what we have done in those games. It’s not like we aren’t creating chances to score goals and win the game, but lapses of concentration towards the end of games have cost us which ultimately has resulted in us losing the game.

“I’ve been very frank and open with the players. We’ve looked at things in all seven games and we won’t panic, we’ll still keep doing what we’ve been doing, but ultimately we have to keep it as tight as we can at the back because we know we can create to win games.”

Shrewsbury are still looking for their first win under boss John Askey after surprising everyone last season.

But they have drawn four of seven games including against second-placed Portsmouth last weekend.

“It happens to a lot of teams,” Powell added. “They couldn’t get over the line the play-off final, and they were in the final of the Checkatrade Trophy, so it was a wonderful year, and to emulate that is a tall order. Equally, with a new manager and losing some players, they are adapting.

“They had a good result last weekend against Portsmouth. They’ve got a way of playing at the minute and we have to overcome that.

“I know the stats in regards to wins, draws and losses, but ultimately League One you can’t call it. It’s whatever happens on the day.

“We’re going to have to make sure we put in a sturdy performance away from home like we have done at Bristol Rovers and Plymouth, where we should’ve really taken six points instead of four.

“I can take heart from we’ve been pretty good on the road so far and we need to emulate that up at Shrewsbury.”

White and Turner needed splitting up; to be honest, I wouldn't have been fussed out of the 2 who lost their place

Happy with the team except from up front. It could turn into hoof ball with Hopper and the too deep Cox. I'm really not getting it. We have a striker with electric pace that scores a high percentage of his chances, and yet he's still on the bench.

Cox and Hopper again? McCoulsky must be **** in training and Robinson unlucky to not get a start soon too. Lack of pace and another afternoon of easy defending for our opponents.

Cox has to start...our only player of year class. Cox + one other

Good to see a change at the back, hopefully it pays off. Come on Southend.

The changes in defence were needed, although I am far from convinced of Demetriou's defensive qualities. If Dieng and Mantom are fully fit that's fine, but I hope we don't see Cox dropping deep and gumming up the midfield, resulting in the ball being lumped up to Hopper all afternoon. I wish Powell was more imaginative and flexible with his attacking options and hope that if substitutions look needed, they will be made in time to make an impact rather than use up time.

Southend United have agreed a seven-day loan extension for David Stockdale from Birmingham City.

The goalkeeper was initially brought in on an emergency loan before last weekend’s defeat to Peterborough United.

With Mark Oxley and Ted Smith both unavailable due to suspension and injury respectively, 18-year-old Nathan Bishop, who has only made two appearances, is the only available goalkeeper.

Stockdale's emergency loan has been extended in time for him to line-up for Blues away to Shrewsbury this afternoon, having done so against Peterborough last time out.

Glad that happened.

SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell has made two changes to his starting line-up for this afternoon’s clash at Shrewsbury Town.
