Just thought it might be nice to have a thread to talk about some of the special people who followed Southend who have now sadly departed this world.

Bob Evans - RIP
I was still quite young when Bob died, I remember first talking to him in a toilet in Oxford he was so passionate about Southend, I use to remember his posts on the zone that had me in stitches. I always thought it was a shame as just about 4 years after his passing we started our moves up the league towards the championship, he would have loved that. Me and Bob was only really starting to become good friends when he left us, at the time he was more like a father figure at football due to my age.
Although the time was short mate I and others will never forget you

RIP

Bob Evans, Train Crewe Blues, what an era that was and is. Bob is sadly missed.

Robin Duncan is another hero who gave Southend so much in effort and support despite being in pain. Great fella and Sammy and Elvis are still keep going in the family tradition of his work. His lad Ben also being just as active as Robin was with Southend.
I don't like this getting old lark.
Both sadly missed

Kethie Summers (Gus) another great Southend fan sadly no longer with us, supporting the Blues from the early sixtiies. In his last days he refused to go into a hospice until he saw the first LDV final at Cardiff on his on TV, died a few days later.

Pete

I lost two mates from the South Upper within 5 years of each other. Alan Fairless and Paul Holland - both true Shrimpers and good friends. Have to admit that my last game before moving out here I had a few quiet thoughts about both of them as I looked out onto the pitch from our usual spot in that part of the ground.

lost my dad in 2002, he was a dedicated shrimper and if it wasn't for him i would probably have never found out about the club i now love.

probably would have followed the sheep and supported liverpool, man ure or wet spam

RIP pops :support:

Yes good shout.
The following is an interesting tribute to Keith.

Paul Holland deserves a mention as always seemed a really decent guy when he ran the coach trips to away games.

Hopefully someone that knew him better than me will write a full tribute to real fan.

Fantastic story about Keith.

He was stopped by Customs coming home from Amsterdam. They opened his bag to find a considerable amount of porn.

"Can you explain this?" they asked him
"I like a w..k" was his reply.

I never did find out if they conviscated it.

I have memories of both.

The first, well I would, he was my old man. We were on the way to Grimsby back in the day. It got called off whilst we were somewhere in Lincolnshire. So, being Blues on Tour, we took the coach to the nearest pub. At this time I was sorta keen on a certain young lady and decided that it was time I made my move. So I promptly got absolutely trousered and made a complete arse of myself. Of course, I didn't notice this. So the Old Fella came over, put an arm on my shoulder and in earshot of everyone there said

"Son, I look at you and sometime I wish instead of shagging your mum that night that I'd had a w..k instead".

Cheers dad.

And Paul Holland, anyone else remember him beating up a car outside Fulham? He was a top bloke who would help out anyone.

The name rings a bell, did he used to help arrange away travel in the early 90's or am I getting him confused

Matthew Pepper was a true southend united fan who was well known in North bank around early 90's. Deid at a young age of 18.
Never forget going to pompey away (first away game without Matt) and what a strange feeling it was.
Then we laid a wreath in the centre circle at Roots hall and the North Bank remained silence however we was playing Millwall and them ******s just booed. I ****ing hate Millwall with a passion!!!

RIP Matt

So what happened to Paul?

Here's an old thread
http://www.shrimperzone.com/vb/showthread.php?t=5392

Regrettably Paul was diagnosed with MS a while before he passed away. As a result of this he fell off the platform at Fenchurch St one day coming back from work & hit his head on the track. After a serious operation or two he spent a fair time recuperating before his untimely early death. He was a good, good guy.

I had the pleasure to know him, the Commander (Gus), Bob Evans & Lord Football's dad Alan. All top men.

The comment made about "wishing he'd had a w**k" instead of being part of the production of LF was indeed true & recounted an a few occasions. At the time it seemed harsh, but fair. But the more I got to know Kerry, the less harsh & much fairer it seemed! :finger:

You know, I've heard that story recounted so many times (your Dad always re-told it so well) that I feel I was there when it happened but in fact I wasn't.

I've got plenty of great memories of time spent with him and also the ****-up we had in The Spread Eagle after his funeral where many of those memories were talked about over numerous pints. I know it's a cliche but I'm fairly sure that's exactly what he would have wanted!

I'm shocked, wasn't a member of the Zone in 2004 so I didn't even know. I remember the coaches to away games back in the 90's, always good fun, at least on the way there. I don't remember coming back on a coach after a win that often.

I remember going to Swindon one year on the coach and being stopped and told if there was any drink on board we would be turned back..the panic and speed of which the alcohol was got rid of was truly amazing.

I knew Bob very well, or should we say Rev Bob, as he bought a certificate on line which made him a reverand, he was very proud of it ;)
He is still in my heart. His funeral showed just how much he was loved. His death was tragic and untimely, he is still very much missed, and as trueblue has already said, he wasn't here to see our rises up the ranks, but I'm sure he is watching from above, with a pint :support:

RIP Bob X

P.S. Train Crew Blues members are still around
