Ahead of this weekends final taking place on Sunday (2.30 ko) at Burroughs Park (home of Great Wakering FC), it's time to take a look at the squad which helped the Zone achieve promotion in record time, and which now have their sights set on lifting the famous Andy Ward Section G Trophy.

It would great to see as many of there as possible - Tickets are £4 and you will be able to sup a beer or 2 while watching the "other" Mighty Blues take on Kingsfield Casuals (who happen to don a Claret kit!!)

ShrimperZone FC 1 – Meet the Players

David Gracie (Manager) aka The Flying Scotsman
Has been with the club since formation in 2003, fulfilling numerous roles in the first few years including Club Secretary and Assistant Manager to Tony Smith. Twice-voted Clubman of the Year, the man known as “Blimp” due to his aerial dominance as a centre half, hung up his boots at the start of the season having made 54 appearances for the club. Following the resignation of former manager Matt Driver in December, David carried on the good work Matt had achieved by securing promotion in only his 3rd game, and led the team to a club record 10 successive victories before falling at the last hurdle in the championship decider. David will be hoping to secure the clubs first trophy in its history, before looking ahead to the challenge of next season.

Dan Armstrong (Midfielder) aka Shrimpersarmy
Dan is a tough tackling midfielder who has been with the club since formation in 2003. Currently holds the record for the most appearances with the club having starred in 83 games during which time he has notched up 15 goals. Affectionately known to team mates as Don or Prince William.

Paul Brandreth (Defender) aka MrB
Also known as Mr B, this veteran player has been around since formation and was the club captain for the 04/05 and 05/06 season . Injuries have held him back since, however he has now established himself as the teams right back with the sort of displays that gained him the Managers Player of the Year in 04/05, and will be looking to add to his 47 appearances for the club.

George Brounos (Goalkeeper) aka SZFC Flapper
This giant of a Goalkeeper is known affectionately as Flapper, due to a couple of “lapses” early on in his ShrimperZone days, who he joined at the start of the 06/07 season. However the team has improved in the past 2 seasons and this is undoubtedly due to the Greek God who has made 37 appearances for the club. Dominating in the air and with the ability to pull of outstanding saves makes him one of the best keepers in the lower leagues.

Lee Connolly (Winger) aka Leeblue
Lee joined at the tail-end of the 06/07 season, and has firmly established himself in the first team this season with some outstanding displays on the wing which also resulted in him netting the vital goal in the win which sealed promotion this year.. Lee brings a tremendous amount of experience to the team, and his enthusiasm and levels of moistness spurs on the rest of the team. Woooooooooo!

Danny Cox (Defender) aka Scrounger700
The Club Captain took over the armband midway through the 06/07 season and has led the team to promotion this season with consistently strong displays at full back. Known to his team-mates as Scrounger, word has it he may even buy a round of drinks if he lifts the trophy. Probably the best full back in the lower leagues and was voted Players Player of the Year and Managers Player of the Year in his debut season for the club last year.

Mike Day (Forward) aka dayos34
Daisy is the clubs top scorer this season with 18 goals – all the more impressive when you consider this was achieved in just 9 appearances. Unfortunately his season came to a premature end in November with a broken leg, however he his back in training now and the whole club are looking forward to seeing him back on the pitch where he will want to add to his 38 goals in 38 appearances, including the crucial winner in the relegation decider against Seasiders two seasons ago.

Richard Day (Forward)
Known as Dicky, he has stepped up to the plate following his brothers injury with an impressive 11 goals in 16 appearances this season. Will work defenders hard throughout the 90 minutes and get himself into some fantastic positions where sometimes he will score and other times not!

Ben Duncan (Midfielder/Forward) aka They Call It Madness
Liverpool have Stevie G, ShrimperZone have Benny D. Joined the club at the start of this season, his all action displays through the middle or on the right have become his trademark. Always looks to get involved, although injury has held him back in the latter part of the season. Scorer of arguably the best goal ever seen for the club with a volley from 45 yards which soared into the top corner.

Graham Hines (Defender) aka GNH
Graham is the only player to have played for all 3 SZFC teams, and recently broke into the starting line-up following an injury which saw him miss the majority of the winter months. GNH brings a wealth of experience having played in the higher levels of Sunday league football before finally signing up to SZFC at the start of the season.

Matt Houghton (Winger) aka Mattytheshrimper
Matty joined the club midway through the 05/06 season and has made a total of 31 appearances for the club since, notching 6 goals from his position out wide. Likes to be known as Missty, although his team mates know him as the ultimate keyboard warrior who will often be found on SUFC forums venting his frustrations about anything and everything.

Martyn McMahon (Defender) aka Junior Toot
Part of the solid defence which conceded a mere 13 goals in the league all season, Martyn will be hoping for another clean sheet in the final. His tough tackling has contained the best of the Division 6 strikers this season. Will often be found warming up for games with a few beers and some dodgy dancing into the small hours at Reflex.

Kirk O’Mara (Defender/Midfielder)
Kirk joined the club at the start of this season and has often been likened to former SUFC player Mark Bentley with his hard tackling, and driving runs down the right flank. Never one to shirk a challenge, Kirk was one of the key players in the giant killing display at Shoebury Boys in the Colin Tyler Cup.

Dean Osborne (Forward) aka Bath Shrimper
Deano has played a part in every game this season, and will break the club record of 23 appearances in a season by appearing in the final. Dean will be hoping to add to his 10 goals this season which have come with his pace and coolness in front of goal. Will always be a handful for any defence.

Dave Raffaelli (Winger) aka Dave
Davros has been with the club since formation and is the third highest in the appearances chart having starred 76 times during which time he has notched an impressive 23 goals. Undoubtedly pace is his strongest asset, and he is probably one of the fastest in the whole league, he has often left defenders looking very foolish as he whizzes by. His efforts on and off the field have helped the club develop and prosper to its current position.

Mark Rothman (Midfielder) aka number11
Mark joined the club at the start of the current season. Previously a manager at Allclaims, Mark brings a tremendous amount of experience to the team and has starred this season in the centre of the park. Not renowned for his scoring feats, he recently notched 4 goals in 3 games which surprised everyone including his Dad who still wanders over on a Sunday morning and will no doubt be cheering on the team again today!

Kevin Talbott (Defender) aka The General
Known as The General, Kev has starred in the centre of defence this season. He has been involved with the club since the first day making 78 appearances in total and scoring 28 goals in the process and is currently working hard behind the scenes in his role as Club Secretary. His desire to get involved in all areas applies equally to events on the pitch where he has notched up an impressive 9 goals – he will be eager to get to double figures in the final!

Simon Woolmer (Forward) aka Wooly
Wooly joined the club in the summer of 2006 and has made 40 appearances since during which time he has scored 6 goals. One of the most skilful players in the team with a strong shot, he has a great touch and his vision has led to many assists over the past 2 years. Works tirelessly throughout the game and is the ultimate team player.

Few comments.

1) With a record of 28 in 78 games would the general not be better upfront.
2) With a record of 6 in 40 games would Wooly not be better off in defence.

Cheers

I should add that The General takes the penalties which accounts for most of his goals!
And probably at least half of Daisys goals are from Wooly assists.

Even so you must get a lot of pens as Kev's record is superb....

I suspect as he is always on a strike or a picket he has loads of time to practice.

Can I also add I saw Kev eating chips before the Essex Cup Final in the spread. Is this really what a peak peformance goal machine like the general should be eating so close to a cup final?

I think a club fine should be in order....

Concessions are also a pound on the day! ( just to note )

How isn't this going to turn into a brag thread?! Erm. I'd say more 40% are penalties - not wishing to be fussy - and i used to have a game or 2 upfront or in central midfield (very distant past!) but i still have bagged 9 goals this season, all of which have come from playing at the heart of defence, 4 of which were admittidly pens! Lets call it 45% then ...

:whistling:

The rest of Kev's goals come from his wandering up the pitch when he should be defending.

Dave, next time you see Kev eating chips, do the honourable thing, and steal them from him. He claims to always buy large so that he can share them round, but this is a lie...
