Skylanders Giants - Levelling

My son loves Skylanders Giants, its ok but obviously aimed for kids.

Any one know anything about it ?

He bought a new Skylander the other day and used it for about half an hour and levelled really quick, 8 levels in that time. Not seen any of them level so fast so is there a reason? Does it relate to the type of level, ie a water Skylander levels faster in a water level?

Only reason I care is he spent ages getting a particular character levelled then was doing his normal messing about and managed to reset it back to the beginning.
