solutions at left back ?

If the invaluable Mr. Hammell is unavailable I will give Sir Steve a call

and be at training with my boots - but there should be another alternative

as I have a slight hamstring -

What is it?

Sodje & Hunt can play there too.

Dont forget Che Wilson was played out of position there too :)

To be honest against QPR it wouldnt be terrible to have 3 centre backs on the pitch as they did ok with set pieces on Saturday.

Have nothing against you but really pi$$es me off when they say che was out of position there when it is clear he played there for two seasons in a row and even has the traditional left back number.

I think what they mean is that Che is naturally right-footed. Although I agree with you that he managed to cover this position superbly given that fact. One of the unsung heroes of the last two seasons. Very solid, I hope he gets a chance when he comes back. On top of this Che is one of the best club men we've got, always got time for the fans and makes an effort to come and say hello. How many of the others do we see in the Far Post?

Freddy Eastwood could play in goal for two seasons straight but it wouldn't make him a goalkeeper. Che was always playing out of position at left-back.

Sodje played left-back in the 2002 World Cup, Barrett had, IMO, his best performance of last season at left back against Brentford at home. Neither are ideal but I think they could both do at least as good a job there as Che Wilson could.

Unfortunately I did not see this game but can say that at brentford away, when he also played left back, he had an absolute shocker and couldn't have looked more out of place if he had been playing in goal!

True, he had a mare that day. Looked totally out of sorts.

Shouldnt p*** you off, Che's favourite position is right back.

Whilst I wish he was here to cover for Hammell I still dont think he is good enough for this level, but he is better than nothing I guess.

Who played well that night though? I seem to recall Sodje & Prior having 'mares too and Goater practically being booed off.

I'm sure Adam Barrett would be a decent enough short-term replacement for Hammell. I think singling him out for the performance at Brentford is harsh as no-one played well that night. In the return fixture at Roots Hall he was awesome in that position and did well enough in another couple of matches at left-back to suggest he could fill in there more than adequately. Plus, he's left-footed and comfortable going forward, which means the side retains its balance. I didn't see the game on Saturday where, by all accounts, Hunt did well at left-back, but I don't see him being as comfortable there, particularly given we are likely to have plenty of possession on Friday with QPR most likely putting 10 men behind the ball for long periods.

Id be ok with Hunt there, but reckon he will be in the middle if McCormack isnt ready.

I think the left back position isnt half as vital as the centre midfield situation.

Any one know if McCormack will play ?

I think Barrett at left back worked well last season apart from Brentford away. At home to Brentford, Barrett was LB and it made us much better attacking corners, I recall Sodje and Barrett both getting on the scoresheet. It will also help us defend corners, our achilles heel this season. In many matches we haven't had enough tall players to cope with excellent deliveries and being organised/marking tight can't prevent the opposition winning headers if they have taller players than us in the penalty box.

Prior to it actually happening i expected Barrett to be a good option at left back , but like others have said that performance at Brentford convinced me otherwise . Also Dad of PrittlewellShrimper witnessed a blazing stand-up row after training during that period last year between Barrett and Tilly which went along the lines of AB: " I can't and dont want to play there and lose my place in the middle " and Tilly: " You play where I fcuking well tell you to play !" So if he does play there expect an unhappy camper.
