Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- London Southend airport, 40 miles east
of the U.K. capital, has been put up for sale by Regional Airports
Ltd., which says the airfield has the potential to be a major
terminal for the southeast of England.
The Hook, England-based airport operator is inviting bids for
Southend after ``a number of parties'' expressed interest, it said
today in a Regulatory News Service statement. Regional Airports
also owns London Biggin Hill airport, a hub for charter flights.
Southend is planning to build a new runway, terminal and
control tower in time for the 2012 Olympic Games, which it hopes
will help boost traffic 60-fold over the next 20 years. A new
railway station will open in 2009 and provide six trains an hour
via the Games site to the Liverpool Street terminus in London's
financial district.
``We have already invested a great deal in the airport's
infrastructure and have secured approval for exciting development
plans,'' Chief Executive Officer Andrew Walters said in the
statement. ``What is required now is for an owner with the
required resources and expertise to realize fully the potential
that we know is there.''
Southend, now used mostly by leisure flyers and business
jets, aims to attract 2 million scheduled passengers annually by
2027 compared with 32,000 in 2006, Managing Director Alastair
Welch said in an interview in October.

Woah. I wouldn't admit to being a fan of anything in LooTown if I were you!
Stansted is my personal favourite airport, nice and close and none of the overcrowding of Heathrow / Gatwick. ;)

Erm.... joking?

I hate f**king flying. Crap way to travel.

City airport is the best airport ever!!!!!

Unsurprisingly MK, I did pick up on that, hence the ";)"..... :D

Flying is sh!t, but it's the only decent way to get to many places.

Australia overland.... seriously fancy this!

However been there, so it's a shame they don't do Chile overland :(

Finally maybe we will be owned by a decent company that will actually spend some money on us!!!! There have been alot of development on the cards anyway and Alistair has been working his nuts off to push the airport forward. Biggin Hill Is Andrew's baby he actually lives right by the airport he puts most of his effort and money into there.

Lets hope they can spend some money and make Southend Airport a really good airport.

Only problem with London City is that as soon as someone near the airport breathes heavily they have to divert into Southend lol!!
