Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-2 Portsmouth FC

Isn't it strange that before tonight it was "our gateway to Wembley". Now we've lost it was a "nothing game".

Who said pre match it was a gateway to wembley and post match it was a nothing game?

Just curious.

So according to CP the team were flat and rusty it was poor.

Yep, CPs verdict here.

On the Pompey defeat…

''It’s the worst possible start - we were flat and we looked rusty. We had the worst possible start and then we just couldn’t build up any true momentum to get ourselves in the game. There was the odd flash here or there, but it was very tough.

They physically competed really well and it was hard for us to do anything in the first-half. To go in at 1-0 would have been helpful, but then they punched us in injury-time at the end of the first-half and that obviously brings a different complexion on it.

We huffed and puffed but it was flat and we needed a spark. I know we need bodies, I think we need something just to spark us off – whether that’s a few new players or not – but we looked really flat tonight and our quality at times was poor.

We had one or two chances and, even then, we’re not putting our foot through it, we’re not shooting, we’re not taking the chances that we’ve practised and that’s disappointing. Without a doubt, there’s no excuses from me, we need a response straight away on Saturday.''

Went home early, couldn’t take the very very poor attitude on display from most of the senior players. Managed to stretch it out until 79 mins but couldn’t take anymore of the cr.p on offer.

Ted 4 I thought he could have done better for their first goal, flapped at crosses, poor kicking and truly looked short of confidence.

Elvis 7 at least he tried but had poor cover from Kightly

Hendrey 5 not up to this level

White 5 seemed to go through the motions

Moore 8 head and shoulders better than any of the others mom easy

Kightly 2 poor not bothered and looked out of condition

Bunn 5 one of the seniors that at least tried occasionally

Hyam 5 a trier but not good enough, very negative

Dru 6 tried but not the same as before his injury

Robinson 2 for turning up in the right kit, although he passed more to the opposition than his own side

Cox 6 tried but not good enough tonight.

Dieng 6 poor bloke must be totally confused, he has played midfield, up front and centre back this season. Reminds me of the way in which Andy Sussex was treated all those years ago!

Isaac 5 has a good future ahead of him I think, but inexperience showed tonight

McLaughlin 3 uninterested and it showed.

Powell and his staff 3. The team looked disorganised, disinterested and disillusioned, probably one of the worst Southend United performances I have ever seen, they obviously cannot organise or motivate the team. Pompey had a team of giants yet three of our taller players were on the subs bench!

Haven’t said this for a few years but.... WOT A LOAD OF RUBBISH!

In previous seasonsunder Brown ,people would be calling for his headafter performances like that saying he has lost the dressing room.but to fair i just think he has a bunch of so called footballers that are either just playing for a wage or seeing out time before they retire.A bunch that have no ambitions at all. GET RID OFF THEM SCP.or you will end up losing your job.Try some of the youngsters one thing you will get from them is honest endeavour and who knows just maybe some might surprise you, what do you have to lose.

Ok, let's see.

Trying to find the words...

THAT WAS JUST AN ABSOLUTE EMBARRASSMENT!

Barely anyone came out with credit. We were beaten by the better team by some distance.

In my opinion we went into the game withe completely the wrong attitude. Not a priority for them we said... well we made them look Premier League. If their shooting had been better it would have been 4 or 5. Made the move of the match in the first half when their central midfielder went around Hyam and Yearwood before playing a precision ball in between three defenders with a pass De Bruyne would have been proud of and the onrushing striker shot past Ted Smith but was denied by the post. If that had gone in, I'd have stood and applauded.

We seem so far away from producing anything even close to that. The whole performance was summed up the in last minute. McLaughlin and Bunn work some space in the penalty area, Macca gets the ball on his left peg, 11 yards out, has a clear sight of goal, just put your foot through it man, you've probably got the hardest shot in the club,,,

So instead of leathering it, he tries to dink/curl/slice/whatever into the top corner, basically the sort of showboating you do when you're 4-0 up, not 2-0 down approaching injury time. Misses the goal by about 20 yards, Disgraceful.

Anyway, well done Pompey.

Ratings - although I;m still angry.

Yearwood and White - 6.5 - joint MOM and the only ones to come out with much credit.

Smith - 5 - Rusty, but not to blame really.
Elvis - 3 - Trod on the ball twice. Seems to be getting worse.
Hendrie - 3 - Jesus was he out on the lash at lunchtime for his birthday?
Moore - 6 - And our best defender gets a hamstring tear and will be out for weeks, Great,
Kightly - 2. Pretend jumping, half hearted challenges. We have him under contract until the end of next season. Just let that sink in for a moment,
Hyam - 2 - What does he actually do aside from get in the way? I never thought I'd see another pro with no obvious attributes aside from Phil Gridelet.
Bunn - 5 -Tried hard enough.
Cox - 4 - Mysterious selection. Played first half. Needn't have bothered.
Robinson - 2. Jesus it gets worse.

Dieng 6, Hutchinson 5 and McLaughlin 3 were the subs.

I'm off to bed. Too depressed.

Some of you may not be aware but that's about our 9th defeat at home this season. We have conceded at least 2 goals in every defeat and the oppo have always scored first. If we score first, apart from Crawley we go on to win and don't usually concede.

I have seen all the other defeats so after 90 seconds my night was not looking good. It did of course get worse, much worse. At least we tried in those other games and at least we always pulled a goal back. Not last night, it was the worst of the lot.

I had heard before the teams were out that Ted would be playing. Oh good I thought at least we will see some of our exciting youth, then I saw the team sheet and realise it was picked by someone who has a tax bill to pay rather than a manager planning on our future...….like this Saturday when we cant play Theo for example and will need another forward.

I did ask around as a team full of senior players but 3rd choice keeper aroused suspicion. It would appear that Oxley has a disc problem and has seen a specialist jus before Christmas. Could well be out long term but as I know personally with discs its an absolute lottery.

At least the festive fun continued in the East Greens with a nice game of musical chairs until a good 30 minutes into the match...….Like everything else in life its all down to all down to mass migration of course......I'm not joking, They come in their hordes from the West, with little or no understanding of our culture in the East Greens. They want to stick together and some of them refuse to mingle in and become part of our community. At one stage I was expecting an appeal by Lily Allen.

Just because the print on your ticket is to small the read, the lighting is bad, the letters of your row are to scuffed to see and your seat is broken anyway. is no excuse....SIDOWWWNNN.

No point in mentioning the game Jai's post says it all for me. Dru showed some of what we have been missing but like every thing else last night their was no end product.

Could it get worse, an ambulance in the car park says yes.,.

As I walked out and thought about some of our performances I couldn't help thinking how apt it is, that this very competition is sponsored by...….Checkatrade…....You have to be vetted, monitored and your work has to come up to a standard. mmmmmm

First half was one of the worst performances I've seen, not helped by that knob with the bell making an appearance in the North Bank, a group of "less able" supporters continually singing the "My garden shed..." song and a bitterly cold wind whipping over the North Bank and into the East blues where we were sitting.

To be fair, I didn't think Robinson had as bad a match as some on here are suggesting. He did at least try, which is more than some of the other senior players did. I thought we looked miles better when McLaughlin came on, and it was obviously unfortunate to lose Dieng at CF when Taylor Moore had to go off - but Hutchinson came on and showed why, in my opinion, he should have started.

Didn't see why we needed to risk Cox when he's going to be our only forward on Saturday. Really odd team selection and yet again, we've shown that a weekend off mid season does us no favours at all.

Left early on 72 minutes, something I've rarely done before.

Is the winding up order just the tip of the iceberg? A serious financial situation could explain a great deal, ranging from Powell's glum demeanour during the past few weeks, to the lack of effort by a number of players maybe not being paid in full and the failure so far to sign a striker or two when it was evident weeks if not months ago we should have had someone lined up as soon as the transfer window opened. Whatever the reason, there seems to be a deep seated malaise hanging over the club and the long awaited move to Fossetts looks more and more like a mirage.

I would have left early - for only the third time in 52 years - but I hate pushing past people!
