Brilliant ending on a very frustrating afternoon. Both teams had slow starts but we grew into it and had quite a few chances. Should have been out of sight by half-time and as has become normal we let it go a bit second half. We looked tired later on and think their three changes against our zero made an impact. Well played to Cox to take his goal superbly well.

Referee was absolutely diabolical, Lund's last foul is a yellow for handball if not persistent fouling and if it's a foul it's a second yellow, felt their red was harsh but reasonable, they'd argue that Fortune was going away from goal, and they were always going to try to get him sent off, he was foolish but gave the ref the opportunity and he was gagging to even it up. His first yellow was a great tackle and never a yellow until they all surrounded the ref.

Smith 7 Some good saves especially late on.
Demetriou 7 Got forward well late on and got better and better defensively.
Thompson 7 Dealt well with their physical forwards.
Ferdinand 8 Superb reading of the game and brilliant bringing the ball forward later on.
Timlin 7 Sloppy in possession at times but was better second half.
Atkinson 6 Should have scored and didn't create much, looked tired.
Leonard 8 The engine of the team, got back and forward, at the centre of everything.
Wordsworth 7 Did well with added defensive duties and tried to get forward.
McGlashan 7 Played well but his second yellow was foolish.
Fortune 7 Frustrating, works hard and makes great runs but takes too many touches at times and finishing let him down late on and he tired early.
Cox 8 Superb finish and a constant thorn in their side.

Subs
Coker 6 Looked a little rusty as would be expected.
Hines 6 Didn't use his pace against tired legs but did try to get the ball in the box.

Cant criticise Brown too much as the only negative was really that he could have made a sub earlier on, and we deserved the win for our brilliant first half. Never would have guessed that it was a game between two play-off chasing sides but we did what we had to do to get the points.

Such a great atmosphere in the W Block after the winning goal. Up the blues!

Fortune, Cox, Thompson and Lenny all 8's

Smith, Ferdinand, Demi, Timlin all 7's

Atkinson 6

Macglashan and Woody 5

Hines 6 looks a tricky player

Not really, we scored later on and they didn't:facepalm:
Until we made changes obviously! For about 10 minutes before that they were exploiting the gaps that we were leaving with Fortune too exhausted to drop back and Atkinson and Wordsworth both caught out a few times.

They also skied a ball over from 4 or 5 yards out and had 2 or 3 other good chances, we showed great character but they'll be annoyed with themselves for losing because they dominated the last 20-25 mins until we wisely got Coker on. Having said that we were well on top for the first 55-60 and only some questionable finishing kept them in it so over the whole match we deserved the win. It does highlight how desperately we need to sign some good backups to come on as subs though because a couple of players like Fortune clearly tired towards the end.

If Ranger is to be gone, then we need to get 2 forwards in quickly, as well as a defender. I also think we need another midfielder as it's quite clear that Brown did not fancy any of our subs until the crowd got on his back. Mr Brown please pull your finger out get a move on with getting players in!!!

What a great game, bit stressful though :'( Hope mrsblue was there so she/he could see what Fortune brings to the team, my MOM today, cheeky goal but held the ball up so well. Well done Coxy :Worthy: with his 100th goal.

Don't do ratings but great to see the confidence in the team at the moment plus Ted has come on leaps and bounds the last few weeks, made some great saves again today. Then to top it off, a last minute winner :happy:Everybody loves that, well except Rochdale :winking:

Cox and Fortune my joint mom.

Great ovation for Marc.

sidenote...when Cokes pinged it for the winner...Phil was pointing to Ferdy..meaning Cokes should have squared to Ferdy!

Fair game.

Match report: Southend United 2, Rochdale 1

SIMON Cox grabbed the 100th goal of his career to fire Southend United to a dramatic 2-1 win against Rochdale at Roots Hall this afternoon.

What a game. Had everything! Can't beat a last minute winner. Been brilliant watching Southend for a while now! Buzzing

Totally agree! A great game with a fantastic ending. It's why we all love football. Perhaps the ref did us a favour in the end by not issuing a 2nd red to Rochdale, as they may have sat back with 9 men behind the ball and that winner may never have happened!!!

Fortune played a blinder but he should have put the game to bed. In fact yet again we should have had 4, and thats not to diminish the excellent goalscoring eye and ability of Cox. Its great to win at the death although I said they would score 60 seconds before they did as the usual bout of nervousness and backing off kicked in.
I remain concerned about us defensively and was pleased to see Cokes back enabling Timlin to push into midfield. We will miss Mc Laughlin and I have some humble pie to eat given the vast improvement in his defensive game, Whenever I see Wordsworth and Mc Glashen in a 4-4-2 I start to sweat a bit. Neither are notably capable defensively and when Demi bolts forward as well we are totally exposed. In the past two games both Wordsworth and Ferdinand have made at least two bad howlers>pass backs in each game, and we have been lucky not to be punished for it.
Like many I expected to see changes made earlier today and thought that even early on or before we went down to 10 , or indeed before they scored that O Neill, Bridge or Hines could have come on sooner and injected the kind of impact that Allen had for them.
Nevertheless great result in the end and keeps us just 3 points off top 5 slot. Looking forward to what we can do to strengthen at the back and upfront, but also thinking a bit more steel and craft in midfield, as a back up to Timlin may also be needed to maintain our push on and great run. Well done our boys today, and more confidence to be gained from that result and not some side scoring against us right at the end for a change
