Echo News Southend United boss Mark Molesley explains putting Shaun Hobson at right-back

Admittedly there aren't many contenders for our POTY but Hobson has to surely be one of them. Looks very solid and formed good partnerships with White and Dieng as well.

But he's been hung out to dry any time he's played RB. Fair play to the lad because he's doing what's being asked of him for the team but he isn't a right-back for as long as he's got a hole in his backside

He should of been honest - "The boss told me, he picks the team and signs the players. I spend all week training them to defend"

Unpopular opinion - Demi if fit has to start in midfield, off the ball he is the best we have in that position. He stops/limits/breaks up opposition play far better than anyone else we have in the middle of the park.

MM is doing a phenomenal job. Sick of reading the expert hindsight amongst our fanbase whether it's on that moronic FB group, Twitter or here.

Just perhaps he (MM) might have a much better knowledge of the fitness of our team than us

Probably best not going on any social media and forums then. Opinions differ

The one thing I would say is hindsight it isn’t. Before during and after many have been saying JD should be there- indeed some when Elvis was fit. So let’s not pretend it’s hindsight. That said it’s good to see the narrative now developing that JD is too valuable in midfield to be used at RB (if the outcome is it’s appreciated what he does there then that’s a positive outcome).
The reality is we have more midfielders than we can point a stick at and JD has been an excellent RB including at international level. He is a better RB than Hobson. Full stop. In the interest of fairness I wouldn’t play JD at CB ahead of Hobson.

Interesting debate. MM has stated he likes high energy full backs in the past. Said he was looking forward to working with Nathan Ralph for that very reason. Maybe he doesn't see JD as having the legs to get up and down the flank. Maybe JD has expressed he has no desire to play there anymore for that very same reason. There is much more hard running needed at full back, which maybe JD can't do anymore due to his knee problem. The fact that Hobson has played at RB on more than occasion, when JD has been fit, supports these points. Hobson is also a fit young man, who I'd imagine is near the top end on the bleep tests etc.
Bizarrely JD probably covers as much, if not more, distance playing in midfield. However, there is not the need to make lung busting runs back to make tackles etc as he has defensive cover behind him when in midfield, and he doesn't make them going forward either. Sadly its that lack of midfield running that limits our goal threat. With the exception of maybe Olayinka none of our midfielders are of the type to make runs beyond the front man or even make runs from deep to get in the box period. But that's another debate.

Not admitting Cordner had a very good game at CB on Tuesday night ?

Absolutely......but last time I looked that wasn’t the debate.

Generally, they all had good games on Tuesday night but collectively they spent insufficient time pushing forward in numbers.

You’re all for square pegs and round holes?

Cordner looked like a square peg sitting snugly in a square hole and crucially against a top side in L2...

He even saved Clifford and Holmes from embarrassment in the first half. Otherwise it might be Clifford's turn to run the social media gauntlet, instead of Hobson

Not arguing that point.

Should Hobson be playing right back?

Why not?. He is a professional footballer who plays in defence. Just because a forward from the team top of league used a nice dummy and then took his opportunity to con the ref doesn't make playing him there a bad decision. Especially when you bring another tall CB into the team. We could have been 2-0 down by H/T without that decision. Its about strengthening the team not one position. Your older and smarter so you know this.....Others wont understand.

Unless of course you are so obsessed with AB you actually want MM to fail so that you personally can be proved right. Just to remind you, managers are like right backs. Just because you personally think someone would be doing a better job, even if that someone is struggling to play with a long term and career ending knee problem.....It does not make you correct......Just ask any PE teacher, they know about this sort stuff

Why not?

Reduces the attacking possibilities as he doesn’t appear to have any overlapping skills.

Not always a problem of course but when we need goals and wins.......

Seems a decent defender though so perhaps if we showed more ambition it wouldn’t matter.

Whatever does AB have to do with it?
