Echo News Southend United chairman Ron Martin slammed by financial expert

Listened to that this morning. Neither of them pulled any punches.

Add in Morecambe, Wigan, WBA, Yeovil, Scunny and Everton (all facing crises of one kind or another) and it isn't a pretty picture.

We're starting to see the Covid legacy coming home to roost. While Ron is a terrible owner and is almost solely to blame for our predicament, Covid really hasn't helped anyone at all.

Can't keep hiding behind the covid excuse. Many businesses were hit by it but have recovered and move on with strategy, drive and business acumen ..... none of which our so called leader possess.

Specifically to football though lots of clubs did lose a lot of money. It was more a general comment, as we know SUFC didn't touch the Covid loans but lots of clubs did and they are now having to be paid back.

I'm not making excuses for our glorious leader. He was failing miserably long before Covid, it has just accelerated things.

A number of things are coming home to roost, but COVID is only a minor one, in my view, and makes only a very marginal difference.

Clubs up and down the league are suffering because of :

  • poor leadership
  • flawed decision making
  • an inability to act and plan strategically
  • woeful costs control
  • in some cases, very poor fan enagement

In Southend's case, the list of poor performance includes (literally) decades of neglect and four (is it?) seasons where the club haven't even done the basics in terms of producing financial accounts. COVID is no fig leaf for Mr. Martin.

I think a lot of it is a case of 'Commons Dilemma' - it is in nobody's long-term interest that almost all clubs are wildly overspending compared with their income, it creates huge structural instability. However, the short-term gains from this overspend make it appear worthwhile on an individual level, and an overspending arms race develops with a finite amount of clubs able to gain a positive outcome. If you don't take part, you slip down the leagues.

Don't want to bring a further downer on the situation; but this pretty much sums up the state of the country. Long-term decline is part of the plan I think, SUFC is just way ahead of the game.

Kieran Maguire seems more concerned / bothered about the financial situation at the club than some of our supporters do!
They originally thought when they started doing the PoF Pod that it would be a shot series of 3-4 episodes. I think they have been doing it three years now, and no end is in sight.

Only this week we have had Birmingham getting a suspended points deduction, and one deal to take over Yeovil seemingly collapse only for new owners to announce they have done a deal this morning. Dull, it certainly isn't.
