SOUTHEND United manager Paul Sturrock wants the club to improve their scouting system in a bid to unearth some gems from the Essex non-league.

In which case he should invite Charlie Kirby to training so he can have a closer look.

I played with Charlie Kirby for Basildon United last season, he is young and a little lightweight and is only just breaking into first XI's at Essex Senior League level. Saying that though, he is technically very decent and a really nice young lad.

Although he is lightweight and has lots to learn, I thought the same when I played with Michael Kightly and Ricky Holmes (agred 17 or 18) who both flourished the higher they went - even though a certain Mr Tilson chose to ignore there abilities and mine :winking:

Well, if there was any doubt of the club reading the Zone, this is it.

I refer my learned colleague to the 24th of October, in the It's Time for a Change thread, number 37, posted by my good self.

We have missed out on many local non league players - Aaron Mclean, Craig Mackail-Smith, Chris Whelpdale, Paul Benson, Ricky Holmes to name a few

They should also have a look at Rhys Braney a very talented 17 year old left back playing regularly for Hullbridge first team in the Essex senior league.

So why isn't there a email address that the club could provide so that tips like above can be investigated???

If there is 10,000 SUFC supporters also watching non-league, there is your first stage coaching team. These can then be looked at by the Club's coaching staff, and recommended to the Chief Scout/First Team Manager...

Terry Skiverton took advantage of this at Yeovil and asked fans to tweet him recommendations for new signings. I think its a good idea personally. No one's saying they will sign a player purely off the back of what a fan says but simply asking the club to send a scout along cant do any harm.

I play really well and currently have 30 goals in 17 games. :winking:

Take this to mean:
Sturrock to Martin: " Can I have a budget from your warchest to buy some players, as we don't have enough to field a team"

Martin to Sturrock: "But last time you wanted to get a load of players in you said you were getting them -not just for league two, but for league one as well" "so the answer is No, go and find some for nothing, Oh and if I do pay them It won't be hardly anthing at all, and definately not on time.

Alex Revell and Matt Harrold are two who played non-league in Essex.

Not sure if fan scouting would have picked them up as most people just called them ****.

We spent circa £250,000 on them.

With our club being so closely situated to the M25 the options are huge but if the club are saying that they have not been looking at the non-league for years then I have to think Mickey and Minnie must be scouting for us.

Reading this thread I think it may be best if people continue to post names on here, like above, then the club do as they think fit.

Just remember they may already have had a look at some people named. Who knows ?

OK , i am now appointing all you Southend supporters as scouts , if you see a player you believe is worth looking at then send their names to PS ,either by mail ,addressed care of PS at southend united football club ,roots hall victoria avenue
or post a thread here and hope they read it.Im sure that with your help SUFC will unearth a few gems.

oh by the way this is purely a voluntary position ,you wont get paid , just the satisfaction of knowing you helped the lad and the club we all love. I sent an email to SUFC concerning to young lads playing here a few seasons back, one of them young lads is now playing for Australia Tommy OAR a left sided player, both are now playing in the Dutch premier division.

27 y.o. Yan Klukowski of Forest Green Rovers. "Tip of the diamond" attacking midfielder. set piece specialist and team's joint top scorer despite missing the first 5 weeks of the season.

Great suggestion. The problem is Yan Klukowski recently signed a new contract with Forest Green Rovers and will not be cheap to acquire.
