Barnsley

Barnsley’s manager Andreas Winker talks to Yorkshire Post before the game

Seven Days on from the garden being pretty rosy at Barnsley, Daniel Stendel has been given something to think about by subsequent events.

An Oakwell derby draw with Doncaster Rovers, in which the Reds were second-best and fortunate to claim a point, was followed by a 4-2 midweek defeat at League One promotion rivals Sunderland, with Stendel’s side seeking to end a challenging week on a positive note at Roots Hall this afternoon In the process, today’s FA Cup assignment in Essex has probably heightened in importance at the start of a pivotal spell for the Reds, who face at least eight long trips south in all competitions between now and early March.

Changes will be made today, with several players in need of game time, but assistant head coach Andreas Winkler insists that fans should be left under no illusions that the cup matters to Barnsley in its own right Winkler, who has spoken of his perfect scenario of the Reds securing a dream draw with compatriot Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the third round, said: “We have a young squad and lots of players who are pushing for the first 11. And we do not differentiate between a cup match and a league one.

“We will hopefully show our best performance and put 100 per cent into this match to get into the next round and maybe get a good opponent. I am sure this will be a very tough match.

“We will make changes, not only because we have had a midweek game. It is because we have players on the bench who are really good and deserve to start from the beginning.

“I am sure we will have a starting 11 who are really strong and can go for this challenge. It is a very important game for the club and we go for everything.”

After cruising into the second round of the cup by comprehensively brushing aside a confidence-sapped Notts County outfit in the first round three weeks ago, Winkler acknowledges that the narrative is somewhat different ahead of a trip to a Shrimpers side who trounced Crawley 6-2 in an opening-round replay on November 20.

Winkler added: “The FA Cup starts from zero and we now play away, so it is a totally different match.

“It is our longest trip since I have been here and we really have to step up our efforts.”

Southend United

Chis Powell talks to Chris Phillips of the ECHO ahead of the game with Barnsley

Southend United manager Chris Powell says his side must ‘go for it’ against Barnsley in the second round of the FA Cup tomorrow.

Blues host the Tykes at Roots Hall looking to join the Premier League sides in Monday night’s third round draw.

And Powell will be adopting a positive approach to the game.

He said: “We’ve got a tough draw but lets get out there and go for it because what’s the worst that could happen?

“We have to dig deep and really put it to them.

“We could go through and get a real humdinger but if you’re beaten by a team who then get a plum draw it really hurts.

“I don’t want that to happen and it would be great to get through.”

The winner of the tie at Roots Hall will receive £54,000 in prize money.

Wiggle it, Just a Little Bit!

Elvis in for the injured Demetriou, Kightly for Bunn, Yearwood for Hyam. Dieng will play attacking midfield again. Turner back in for Moore.

Jason Demetriou could be out for six to eight weeks with his knee injury

Dru fit again, supposedly.

Kites in, as well.

Slightly surprised he didn't stick with Tuesday's side (Demi apart). Especially as Bunn and Hyam had very good first-halves.

0-2 down by half time and then Hutchinson hat trick second half when he comes on as an 86th minute sub.

I'm disappointed that there are changes. I think Dru will nullify Dieng. I have nothing against Dru of course but I don't think Dieng can play we way he did Tuesday with Dru in the side. I'd like to be proven wrong, but I don't think it was a coincidence Dieng was so good for us at the start of the season while Dru was injured, mini-rant over.

Very surprised to see Bunn dropped for Kightly, and also Turner with White in CD, no pace, surely Moore with either, but not both. Is Dru fit then? Also concerned as Hyam was looking good since comeback and filled the ball winning MF role....

I fear a loss here.

Apart from Elvis, this is a side without any pace. Is this was an away tie, maybe such a defensive selection might make sense to play for a replay back home. Why is Bunn in and out of the side, just one of several eyebrow raising decisions. Hope Hutchinson gets more than a derisory couple of minutes.

Very poor formation and wrong players Mr Powell
Hope he changes it in the game ,or could be heavy defeat

Why,Dieng is playing up front again behind Cox?!!
