The Roots Hall pitch looks fantastic and is ready for action at 15.00 pm Saturday 6th August 2022 against Boreham Wood. It looks like we will have nice sunny day with a gentle breeze at Roots Hall. The temperature will be around 22°C but feel like 23°C

Tough opener – for Southend United boss Kevin Maher

Southend United boss Kevin Maher thinks his side are starting the National League season with one of the toughest possible tests at this level.

Blues host Boreham Wood on in their opening game of the campaign on Saturday.

And Maher is fully aware how difficult the game will be.

"It doesn’t come any tougher really," said Maher.

"They’ve recruited ever so well in the summer and we know how good they were last year too.

"They tailed away a little bit but they had a great cup run and they will ask questions of us.

"Hopefully we’ll ask some questions too and I think it will be a tough game for both teams."

Among those to have joined Boreham Wood this summer is former Blues loanee Zak Brunt who will spend the season with Luke Garrard's side from Sheffield United.

But Maher knows Saturday’s opponents boast a number of good players.

"Zak did well for us and he’s an excellent player but they have a few of them including Jack Payne who they've brought in too," said Maher.

"We’ll have to be on top of our game if we're going to win it."

Options – for Southend United boss Kevin Maher

Jake Hyde is in contention to make his Southend United debut against Boreham Wood this weekend.

Hyde joined the Shrimpers on a season long loan from Wrexham earlier this week.

And Blues boss Kevin Maher will be able to call upon the forward for the first time on Saturday.

“He’s in good shape,” said Maher.

“He hasn’t played loads and loads of minutes but he’s in a good place.

“Someone with his experience knows the game and knows where to be on the pitch.

“He’s in contention for Saturday.”

Midfielders Harry Taylor, Cav Miley, Wes Fonguck and Dan Mooney are also pushing to make their competitive debuts for the club on Saturday along with striker Chris Wreh.

However, defenders Louis Lomas and Gus Scott-Morriss - who have also joined since the end of last season - are not ready to be fully involved at this stage.

"Louis Lomas has been back on grass which is good to see but Gus is still a little bit away," said Maher.

"We’ve got a good squad to chose from who are fit and raring to go."

Blues will be without the suspended Jason Demetriou while strikers Harry Cardwell (ankle) and Rhys Murphy (knee) are both still sidelined for Saturday's opener.

Arrowsmith, Benton, Scott Morris, Wood, coker

Plus one other all out warming up, but not part of match squad

Hopefully means Scott Morris isn't too far away from full fitness

Tough on Powell to not get a start but good to have competition in the squad
