Kings Lynn Town Manager Tommy Widdrington match interview with Lynn News before travelling to Roots Hall for this evening’s game

King's Lynn faced with Southend trip in National League

It will almost be home from home when King’s Lynn Town manager Tommy Widdrington takes his side to Southend in the National League tonight.

Widdrington doesn’t live a million miles from Roots Hall and once worked with the Shrimpers as assistant manager.

“I don’t live far from Southend’s ground and I have worked there before,” said Widdrington.

“We are under no illusions. I think with the staff and the people who are running their operation now I can’t see Southend struggling for much longer.

“I can see them having an upturn in their form which they already have under Kev (Maher)

“He is a good football man, a great coach, we are going there knowing it is another scenario, fortunately or unfortunately after the Dover game, where everyone we are playing are clubs with massive stature and infrastructure compared to ourselves.

“But I am not going to use that as an excuse every week because if I look at the table the vast majority of clubs are like that, what we have got to do is make sure on footballing terms we have got to go there and give them a game and take out of there what we can.

“The season won’t be defined on Friday night. I know I have a figure in my head on how many games we have got to win, which games we have got to win, but it never works like that, if you try to play football on paper it is nonsense – every game is 11 v 11 and a team prepared and functioning right on the day or night will come out victors.

“We will try and do that every time we take to the pitch, what I am hoping
for is we do it more often than not.”

Lynn’s boss yesterday added to his ranks by signing attacking midfielder Harry Phipps on loan from Dagenham and Redbridge for the remainder of the season.

Phipps’ progress with the Daggers was hampered by a cruciate injury back in 2020, from which he has now fully recovered.

His arrival came on the back of Widdrington returning to his former club Bristol Rovers earlier in the week to bring youngster Zain Walker back to The Walks.

Walker spent a month’s loan with the Linnets last September and has signed a deal until the end of the current season along with left-back Olly Scott who initially arrived in Norfolk on trial before Christmas.

Southend United boss Kevin Maher expects tough test against King's Lynn despite their poor run

Tough test - Southend United boss Kevin Maher feels King's Lynn will be tough to beat

Southend United boss Kevin Maher will be paying little attention to the form guide ahead of Friday night’s clash with King’s Lynn.

The second from bottom visitors have triumphed just once in their last 13 National League games.

But Maher is expecting a tough contest against Tommy Widdrington’s team.

"It’s a tough game,” said Maher.

"They’ve had a change of manager and Tommy (Widdrington) is someone I know from our time together at Bristol Rovers.

"They will come fully prepared, they have some good players and will give us a tough game.

"But with their position in the league and ours as well, this is a big one.

"If we’re not up for it we will come unstuck but the players have trained well and there’s a better buzz around the place.

"We’ve got to build on that but we know there’s still a long way to go."

Blues have lost just once in their last six games and are now seven points above the drop zone.

And Maher is looking forward to more Friday night football at Roots Hall.

"Friday nights at Roots Hall are always great occasions and hopefully it will be the same tonight

The Big Preview

Southend United vs Kings Lynn Town

Big Preview.jpg

Overview

In a month filled with crucial clashes at the bottom end of the National League table, Southend United face yet another important game as King’s Lynn Town make their first ever visit to Roots Hall.

Three league places and 11 points separate the two sides going into the fixture, former Blues coach Tommy Widdrington was installed as manager last month in hope for fifth tier survival.

Kevin Maher will be relishing the chance to lead his side 10 points clear of the relegation zone ahead of Saturday’s fixtures, but faces a tough test against an improved side under a new regime.

Blues will be aiming to repeat the outcome of their previous meeting, their debut match in the National League as they fought to a 1-0 victory at The Walks Stadium, thanks to an early Sam Dalby strike.

The Opposition:

Lynn’s rise to the National League was a remarkable one, achieving double promotions from the Southern Football League and the National League North to arrive in the fifth tier.

And, contending with bigger budgets while only this season adjusting to a full-time set-up, their adaptation to the National League has been respectable, but times are tough for the Linnets in the current campaign.

Having picked up just 11 points all season, they must double their tally simply to keep level with Maidenhead United, who occupy 20th spot.

Widdrington has taken on the mighty challenge in hope of leading a great escape, he must instantly resolve Lynn’s issues both in defence and attack, having scored the joint-least number of goals in the division while also possessing the second leakiest defence.

Form:

Blues will be looking to make it three consecutive league victories for the first time since October 2018.

Last time out, Maher’s side suffered a 2-0 defeat away at Dagenham and Redbridge in the FA Trophy, but that has not detracted from the positivity exuberated from recent improvements in league form.

In all competitions, Blues have won three of their last five matches, and have picked up eight points from their last possible 15.

Meanwhile, the Linnets have won two of their six matches under new boss Widdrington, an FA Trophy triumph against Nantwich Town shortly after their 2-1 league victory over Dover Athletic.

However, Lynn have lost 12 of their last 14 matches in all competitions.

From The Boss:

"Friday night at Roots Hall are always great occasions and hopefully it will be the same tomorrow night,” said Maher.

"It’s a tough game, they’ve had a change of manager and Tommy [Widdrington] is someone I know from Bristol Rovers.

"They will come fully prepared and will give us a tough game.

"But with their position in the league and ours as well, this is a big one.

"If we’re not up for it, we will come unstuck, but the players have trained well and there’s a better buzz around the place.

"We’ve got to build on that, and we know there’s still a long way to go.

"Blues’ Team News:

Leon Davies is set to make his Blues debut against the Linnets with Jason Demetriou serving a one-match suspension.

Also in line for his first appearance for the club is new signing Harry Cardwell, the striker joining the club on a permanent deal from Chorley on Thursday.

John White and Will Atkinson are both back fit and could feature for Blues this evening.

Rhys Murphy, Jack Bridge, James Dunne and Simeon Akinola are all side-lined.

Ref Watch:

Lloyd Wood will take charge of proceedings in Blues’ important Friday night clash.

He has yet to referee Blues this season.

But Wood has officiated on seven occasions in the fifth tier so far this campaign, showing 19 yellow cards and a single red.

Joining him will be Craig Simpson and Craig Green as assistants, with Craig Barnett as fourth official.

Tickets:

Tickets are on sale for the game from the Blues Box Office online, on the phone (0344 477 0077) or in person.

Tickets cost £20 for adults, £15 for concessions and £10 for juniors (9-16) and £5 for a child (8 and under).
