Yeovil Town Manager Darren Sarll match interview before travelling over to Roots Hall for this evening’s game

Darren Sarll.jpg
Yeovil Town Manager Darren Sarll

Speaking after Yeovil’s FA Cup exit, the boss said, “All the glamour is over now. The cameras that are not normally here, they won’t be back. It’s important we get back to being gritty, earning three points, taking draws away.

“It’s time now to get back to the reality of what the fifth division in English Football looks like. Tuesday will be tough because Southend are a well supported club with a bigger resource than us.”

Team news

Despite a COVID-19 scare, Yeovil Town were able to name an almost full compliment in the FA Cup against AFC Bournemouth.

Mark Little was a noticeable absentee from the bench as his long-awaited return seems to be delayed another week.

Joe Quigley marked his first start after injury with a goal against the Cherries and will be vying for another start in Essex.

There could be a return for Grant Smith who has now served his two-game suspension for his red card against Torquay United.

Kevin Maher feels Southend United are growing in confidence ahead of Yeovil Town clash

On the up - Southend United won at Weymouth at the weekend

Southend United boss Kevin Maher feels the Shrimpers are slowly starting to grow in confidence ahead of Tuesday night's clash with Yeovil Town at Roots Hall.

Blues head into the game having been beaten just once in their last six outings.

And Maher feels things are now starting to move in the right direction for his side.

“It was an important win at Weymouth on Saturday and overall it was a good performance too which I think shows we’re moving in the right direction,” said Maher.

“Getting an important win like we did at the weekend always builds confidence.

“We’ve lost once in six so that should build confidence too and we want to take that into this game.

“It’s one we’re looking forward to as well.

“We’ve done it away from home now we need to transfer it to Roots Hall under the lights on Tuesday.”

Tomorrow's encounter against the Glovers will be just the second time the Shrimpers have played a home game in the National League since mid November.

And Maher is eager to return with another solid performance as Blues bid to secure back to back wins for the first time this season.

“It’s been a little while since we’ve been at home after the games were called off over Christmas,” said the Blues boss.

“We’re delighted to get back in front of the fans and I’m sure they will turn out in good numbers because they always do.

“I’m sure they will get behind us as well and that’s what we need at home.”

Blues head into tomorrow’s game sitting 19th in the table, four points above the drop zone.

Yeovil, who were beaten by Bournemouth in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday, are placed in 11th.

And Maher knows the Glovers will be tough to beat.

“I know Darren (Sarll) their manager well and his team will definitely be organised,” said Maher.

“He will have them well up for the game so it’s going to be tough.

“We watched them at Bromley where they won but we will be ready.”

Yeovil had won eight out of nine games but have now suffered three defeats in succession prior to Tuesday's encounter.

The Big Preview

Southend United vs Yeovil Town

Big Preview.jpg

Overview

Southend United will be looking to build upon their crucial victory at the weekend, as they go head-to-head with Yeovil Town under the Roots Hall lights this evening.

Blues secured a huge three points just three days ago, beating Weymouth 1-0 to pull four points clear of the relegation zone.

And Kevin Maher’s side will be gunning to further that gap tonight, but face a tough test against the Glovers who put in a strong performance against Championship leaders Bournemouth in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, a match which ultimately ended in 3-1 victory for the Cherries.

Tonight’s visitors sit 11th in the National League standings, seven points from the play-off spots and 12 points better off than Blues.

Yeovil’s record against Southend makes for grim reading for Blues fans, the side from the West Country a earning 1-0 victory in four of the sides’ last five meetings.

The Opposition:

Formed in 1895, the Glovers have a rich history in England’s top four tiers, but have been resigned to the National League since their relegation from League Two in 2019.

Yeovil were competing in the Championship as recently as 2014, however after their first season in the second tier, they suffered a double relegation back to the Football League’s basement division and suffered from poor form until their eventual drop to the National League.

Upon their arrival to non-league, they appointed former Stevenage manager Darren Sarll, and he has so far navigated the job impressively in difficult circumstances.

Blues striker Rhys Murphy will be greeted by some familiar faces as Yeovil come to town, the 31-year-old enjoyed a fruitful two-year spell with the Somerset club until he signed for Blues last summer.

Form:

Southend boss Maher has overseen an impressive turn in form in recent weeks with his side losing just once in their last six outings.

In that time, Blues have tasted victory three times, while drawing twice.

And a real positive for Maher’s outfit in their last three outings has been the presence of Matt Dennis in attack, the Norwich City loanee has scored in each of the three matches, his latest strike a well-taken composed finish to secure victory for Southend at Weymouth.

This evening’s visitors travel to Roots Hall having lost all their last three matches.

But the form guide seems harsh on the Glovers, as before their most recent setbacks, they had been on an 11-match unbeaten run in which they achieved nine victories.

From The Boss:

"It shows we’re building in the right direction and it’s important we keep that standard where it’s been the last couple of games," said Maher.

"We’ve done it away from home now we need to transfer it to Roots Hall under the lights tonight.

"Getting an important win like we did at the weekend always build confidence.

"We’ve lost once in six so that should build confidence too and we want to take that into this game.

"It’s been a little while since we’ve been at home after the games were called off.

"We’re delighted to get back in front of the fans and I’m sure they will turn out in good numbers because they always do.

"I’m sure they will get behind us as well and that’s what we need at home.”

Blues’ Team News:

John White will be touch and go for Blues as he has just re-joined training after suffering an injury against Bromley on Boxing Day.

Louis Walsh and Collin Andeng Ndi missed out on Saturday but could feature in the squad tonight having both recovered from Covid-19.

Jack Bridge, James Dunne, Abu Ogogo and Simeon Akinola remain out.

Ref Watch:

Adrian Quelch will oversee proceedings at Roots Hall tonight.

It’ll be his second trip to Roots Hall this season, having officiated Blues’ 3-2 defeat to Aldershot Town in September.

This season, he has refereed eight National League fixtures, brandishing 34 yellow cards in that time and three reds.

Jeffrey Aldous and Stephen Parkinson will be assistants with Jamaal Horne as fourth official.

Tickets are on sale for the game from the Blues Box Office online, on the phone (0344 477 0077) or in person.

Tickets cost £20 for adults, £15 for concessions and £10 for juniors (9-16) and £5 for a child (8 and under).

Match for Mind

Mind.jpg

Tonight’s fixture has been dedicated as a’ ‘Match for Mind’. A handful of supporters will be walking from Chelmsford to Roots Hall with the match ball as the game is geared around encouraging those struggling to speak out. The match involves two teams who have been hit hard by mental health in the past. On January 1st, 2020, we sadly lost former captain Chris Barker, while Yeovil also sadly lost captain Lee Collins after mental health struggles in March 2021. So far, almost £2,000 has been raised for South East and Central Essex Mind, and donations are being accepted here.

Apologies if this has been asked many times already, but are we doing streams for Tuesday night games or is that dead now we're not in the football league anymore?

No live TV streams I am afraid since leaving the EFL, BT Sport has exclusive rights to the National League. We are lucky now if we get 2 minutes of "Highlights" a couple of days after the game.

You can listen on Blues TV (audio only) or here

Top scorer Quigley is on the bench for the Glovers. Hopefully that's good news for us.

It's live but it's also silent on my computer (no, I haven't got it on mute).
