SUEPA (Southend United Ex-Players Association) welcomes Stuart Parker

Stuart Parker.jpg

On Saturday against Blackpool FC we are delighted to welcome another Southend United Ex-Players Association (SUEPA) guest – Stuart Parker.

Stuart was with us for just 18 months during the mid ‘70’s yet plundered 31 goals in just 74 appearances, finishing leading scorer in the 1976/77 season and scoring some memorable goals. Perhaps what he will be remembered for most are the five goals he scored in the FA Cup as we won our way through to the fifth round of the FA Cup against Derby, including a memorable late winner against Cardiff.

Stuart started his footballing career at Blackpool FC where he still lives today so it is fitting he will be visiting us when we play against his hometown team.

Please be sure to give him a great Roots Hall welcome

Simon Grayson talks to Blackpool Gazette before travelling to Roots Hall

Blackpool FC’s Curtis Tilt and James Husband train as usual ahead of Southend United trip

Blackpool FC have no fresh injury doubts ahead of their first away trip in the new League One season at Southend United.

Curtis Tilt and James Husband picked up slight knocks against Bristol Rovers, but both have trained this week.

Simon Grayson confirmed everybody else is fit and raring to go for the trip to Roots Hall.

“I think everybody came through the weekend but Matty Virtue is still going to be a doubt,” Grayson said.

The lads that were left out last weekend can still be a factor; they played a bounce game this week at Fleetwood and one or two caught the eye.

“First and foremost, that bounce game was about getting 90 minutes into the majority of the lads to make sure they will be ready when called upon.

“You’ve also got to approach it in a professional manner but you can never replicate a first-team game with supporters but there were some decent signs.”

Southend started the new campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Coventry City, but will be looking to put that right.

Over pre-season Southend changed their system around a little bit,” Grayson added.

“This is their first home game of the season so they will want to get off to a good start and get over their disappointment at Coventry last weekend.

“It’s a tight ground and we’ve got to expect them to come at us, so we will have to defend as a team and attack as a team and do whatever is required to go and get a result down there.

“You’re going to get different tests throughout the season, whether that’s the ground or the personnel you’re playing against.

Either way you have to adapt to it and make sure, no matter where you’re going, you stand up and be counted.

When you’re away from home, we’ve got to make sure we ask questions of the opposition when we’re attacking and do whatever is required to win the game.”

Southend

Kevin Bond talks to the Chris Phillips at the ECHO ahead of the game with Blackpool FC

Southend United manager Kevin Bond wants to see his Shrimpers side have
learnt from their opening day setback when they host Blackpool FC at Roots Hall tomorrow.

The Shrimpers were beaten 1-0 away against Coventry City last weekend.

But Bond is keen for Blues to make amends in their first home outing of the new campaign.

“I would like to think we learnt a lesson from the Coventry game and the key is not to make the same mistake again,” said Bond.

“We all make mistakes but we can’t afford to make them again and we have to show that on Saturday.

“We didn’t start the game like we wanted last week but there were reasons for it.

“We couldn’t get after that like we wanted to but we have to learn from that and take that into the Blackpool game.”

In contrast to Blues, Blackpool kicked off the League One campaign with a 2-0 win against Bristol Rovers.

And Bond is expecting them to be tough opposition.

“Blackpool had a good win and we’re fully aware of their physical presence because they’re a big, strong side with a lot of energy,” said the former Bournemouth boss.

“They will be a threat so we have to make sure we don’t give silly free-kicks away and we need to stop as many balls as we can coming into the box.

“We have to deal with it but we have to go and give them problems too because if we’re not at it we’re going to get beaten.”

Bond looks set to make changes to his starting line-up for tomorrow’s clash and has had his options boosted by the loan signing of winger Layton Ndukwu.

Adding to that, Jason Demetriou and Timothee Dieng are also back in training.

And Bond is pleased to have more players to pick from.

“Tim is back training this week and he’s back in the reckoning along with Jason,” said the Shrimpers boss.

“It gives us another option and extra competition for places.”

Kevin Bond talks to the Southend United OS ahead of the game with Blackpool

Kevin Bond has called on a disciplined performance from his side this weekend.

Blues face a physical Blackpool team who pose an aerial threat from the likes of Armand Gnanduillet who stands at 6ft 4, so any free kicks given away around the penalty area could cause problems.

Following the opening day defeat to Coventry last weekend Blues will be hoping to get some points on the board from their first home game this weekend.

And Bond said it’s important his side learn from the defeat to the Sky Blues ahead of facing Simon Grayson’s Blackpool.

On the week leading up to the game…

It’s been a good week. We were disappointed [last weekend] because it was the first game of the season and we didn’t start the game like we wanted and there were reasons for it, but we couldn’t get after them like we wanted to until we had made a change.

Then we did but had gone a goal behind. We did enough to get back in it, had a couple of really good opportunities but it wasn’t to be.

I think we learnt a lesson, or I would like to think we learnt a lesson from that, and the key is not to make the same mistake again. We may all make mistakes but hopefully we don’t make the same mistake again.

On how the new players have settled into the group…

I think from my perspective they seem to have settled in fine but it’s not a difficult group to settle in, they are a good group of boys and make everybody feel welcome.

It’s just getting them use to what we expect from them on the pitch.

It does take a bit of time if you’re introducing new people into the group but in that we still have to get results and we’ve still got to put in a level of performance so we’re absolutely aware of that come Saturday’s game.

On the physical presence that Blackpool bring…

We are what we are from a physical point of view, but we are very aware that they have got that physical presence and they will be a threat in those areas. Everyone will need to make sure we don’t give silly free kicks away, they will be putting it in a box from corner kicks from the first opportunities they get. We are aware of that so we will try and stop as many balls as we possibly can, but when they do we have to deal with them.

On Simon Cox having another week of training…

He’d only joined in really a day and a half before last week, he could never really figure for any great length of time. He came on for just over the last twenty minutes of the game and he will be a lot better or having a full week of training as will the other players.

We’ve got Jason Demetriou just back in training which we’re thankful for, he gives us another option and a bit of competition down the right hand side which we badly need.

We have got options up front as Theo knows with the front boys and its just trying to find a way of getting them in the team and build that competition for places. The boys know if they don’t perform then someone else will take their place.

Join us in a minute of tribute to life long fan Neil

A MINUTE-long applause is being planned in memory of a life-long Blues fan.

Southend United make their first home appearance of the season on Saturday and the grieving family and friends of Neil Haslam, are planning the minute-long tribute.

The 28-year-old died on June 5.

Mr Haslam had been a regular at Roots Hall from a young age, and his brothers and parents will be at Saturday’s game against Blackpool.

The family and Neil’s friends are organising an unofficial minute-long applause in his memory in the 28th minute.

Brother Louis Waters said: “It will mean a lot to us as a family, and a lot to Neil as well.

“He watched as many Southend games as possible, and I do not doubt he will be watching the game on Saturday.

“He will be watching the game, and watching over us, and it will mean a lot to everyone.”

Louis paid tribute to Neil as a well-loved and caring man.

The 27-year-old added: “He was a loved uncle, brother, son, and was selfless in everything he did.

“Family always came first for Neil.

“He was a clever man, very clever, he went to university but dropped out.

“Unfortunately he had his demons, like so many of us do, and unfortunately they got the better of him in the end.” Following his death, a fundraising page was set up to support the family funding his funeral, which raised £4,500.

The funeral was held on July 5 at Southend crematorium, with friends and family donning Blues shirts.

Louis added: “He has been going since he was a kid; we have all been going together, Southend United meant so much to him.

“He was popular, £4,500 was raised for his funeral, which says it all really.

“The funeral was amazing, there was a huge turnout and everyone wore Southend shirts in his honour. It meant a lot to us as a family.

“It has been difficult, but I am throwing myself into my work, and my family and two young children.

“Neil was a family man and would have wanted that, I keep thinking about the time we spent together, particularly over Christmas.”

The family are hoping fellow fans will join them in the tribute in the 28th minute on Saturday at Roots Hall.

RIP Neil :Clap::Clap::Clap:

Can't be 532...Grapevine said Bond didn't use that formation once in pre season so wouldn't use it all season ???????

Sometimes needs must and personnel dictates.....I also said this morning I thought he’d go this way due to Ridgewell being available and Goodship injures.....

And I didn’t once say he wouldn’t use it all season...that’s being very very economical with the truth....I said it was KBs preferred formation and that he wouldn’t use something different on the opening day!!!

Is it me or does Shaughnessy look like Martin Sheen
