Southend v Liverpool 1979

Tangled up in Blue

Certified Senior Citizen⭐🦐

The highlights of this game are now up on the OS.First time I've seen them (though I had a ticket for the postponed game on the Saturday).

Unfortunately ,I had to catch a MagicBus coach to Barna on the Sunday in order to get back to work on the Monday. No EJ flights in those days!

Any other stories of the game out there?

Yes, I got in the game for nothing,
At the back of the South Bank, just before kick off they opened the gates (pre Hillsborough obviously)
So I think the official numbers from the attendance would have been wrong.

Brilliant night at Roots Hall, was there with my late Dad - remember on the way there Dad kept saying that he thought it wouldn't go ahead but that snow was a great leveller. Right up there with my favourite ever games.

Love to see highlights but doubt there are any of the year we defeated Liverpool in the FA cup ,im going back now to 1957 i think ,Liverpool were then top of division two as there was no premiership, championship in them days,i remember it mostly as i was a school kid at Porters Grange and our teacher a Mr Higgins walked in and chalked the score on the blackboard and we all cheered .i believe the following year we played them again in the FA and lost in a replay to them .

Was this the year we lost a replay at Anfield 3-0 , i remember reading in the paper in AUSTRALIA ,how the Kop cheered and applauded the Southend team after the game for coming there and playing an attacking brand of football and not being defensively minded .

Absolutely true. My experience of the city, the match and the Scouse fans that day, made Liverpool the team I follow in the Premiershite.

Yes, remember those scenes after the match, one of my best memories of supporting the Shrimpers.

I was at the home game, and many years later have become friends with one of our players who played in both the home game and replay. Thankfully he doesn't mind my constant questioning about it whenever I see him, it was a massive highlight for the players as well as us fans!
