The PL League Boss⭐⭐
This my little tribute to our fathers and grandfathers etc who make us all proud to be Southenders. During the war the Southend Standard had a weekly column showing news of local men such as:
EKCO EXECUTIVES LOSS – A 19½ year old man has been killed in active service, the son of an executive of E.K.Cole Ltd. At the age of 18½ he volunteered for service with the R.A.F. after qualifying as a pilot he was posted to a fighter squadron and served at various locations in England, Northern Ireland and Iceland.
PRISONER OF WAR – Having been officially reported missing three months ago, new has been received that the only son of a Southchurch family is now a prisoner of war at Muhlburg Stalag. He was taken prisoner during the fighting in Crete and was subsequently transferred to hospitals in Germany.
PITSEA MAN WINS D.S.M. – A Pitsea woman has received news that her husband has been awarded the D.S.M. , he is serving on a submarine in the Mediterranean. He is 22 years old and has a daughter aged two.
GEORGE MEDAL FOR LEIGH SEAMAN – For brave conduct on his ship during attack by enemy aircraft it is announced the award of the George Medal to a 24 year old man from Leigh. His ship was attacked by dive bombers on the outward journey and was torpedoed and sunk on the return journey, and after a long lifeboat journey enlisted on another vessel which was again torpedoed and sunk and is currently interned.
VICARS SON WITH R.A.F - . After a lapse of five weeks news has been received by a Westcliff vicar that his son aged 20 is serving with the R.A.F. in Russia.
D.F.C. FOR FORMER THORPE BAY PILOT - A flying officer has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He received his commission in early 1940 since when he has taken part in numerous operational flights over Germany and Italy, he has been wounded and recently crashed in the North Sea and spent thirty hours in a rubber dinghy before being picked up by a trawler. He is 23 years of age.
This is some of the reports from the 16th October 1941 and and at the same time the following advert appeared in the Standardl:
WOMEN OF SOUTHEND VICTORY IS IN YOUR HANDS
You can hear them saying that, the finest soldiers, sailors and airmen in the world from Britain and the Empire.
YOU can stand behind these armies of ours – fighting in the factories, or freeing a soldier for active service by joining the A.T.S. Your place is waiting the need is urgent Our War Work Week is your chance to show the world that the women of Southend are doing their utmost for Victory, and the freedom and peace it will bring to us and our children. Don’t wait to be registered – don’t wait for instruction! Show the spirit that wins – choose your own jobs and volunteer for it NOW.
HERE ARE THE IMMEDIATE NEEDS
THE A.T.S. There are few war jobs which offer such opportunities, such expert training, such useful progress. Your work in the A.T.S. maybe convoying vital supplies, working on secret devices, making secret drawings – the jobs are legion. Whichever of them you undertake you will be directly helping to get the war over and won quickly!
WAR WORK In the great army factories is interesting, well paid and anyone can do it. No experience is needed. If you have to work away from this district, billeting arrangements will be made in advance and you will be well looked after. War work offers you a new and interesting occupation one that thousands of girls are already doing and enjoying.
Proud of them all.
