The government are putting on a recruitment drive for a lot more Special Constables. At the same time, recruitment of Police Officers has almost come to a halt, with hundreds laid off, and lots more to follow.

Now when you consider that the Specials are volunteers and are paid 70 pence an hour, you get more of an idea why this drive is happening, despite the government insisting the timing is just coincidence, Yeah right.

I think it is about time people realise this country is ****ed and it is every man for himself now..I am ashamed of the way we have ended up.

My mate was accepted into the police force in mid-late 2009 and she was told that she was in no mater what. This was for the MET. She then got a phone call a week later saying that due to certain cut backs she would not be allocated a placement in the round she applied for but would be put on a holding waiting list - this was confirmed that all people of this list are confirmed trainee's and it she would put through in the next round of placements. There was 2000 people on this waiting list who were all told that over the next 3 years they would be placed and that it was definite confirmed that they would all get places. 3 months ago she got a phone call saying sorry but due to cut backs they can no longer recruit and that there would be no placements avalaible for the forseeable future and that everyone on the waiting list to be scrapped. However she could apply to be a special counstable! Brillaint hey!! There she was, knowing she may have a little wait, but the job she really wanted was there for her and then to be told nop, sorry but hey you can volunteer. You can imagine her response!

That really is outrageous. Also, it would have affected her career wise in the waiting period, as she probably took any job whilst waiting for the one she really wanted, and was promised.
You can picture the Con/Lib pact politicians discussing cut backs, and saying 'Why don't we do away with some existing P.Cs and the waiting list, and replace them with these Specials at 70p an hour. This will be a saving of....'.
The sad thing is, a lot of these Specials are only doing it as a fast track way to get in the police force.
