Southend United football club is pleased to announce that the High Court Petition to wind up the club was avoided as the substantial debt to the Inland Revenue was paid.
This payment was made from funds provided by the club's major shareholder, in support of the club, despite John Main (who was removed as chairman of the club on Monday by the board of directors) refusing to resign as a director. The board of directors resolved to implement the financial conditions attached to the refinancing, which was at the last minute amended to allow the club to take this course of action without breaching the terms of the financial package.
The club will now requisition an EGM to remove this last barrier to receiving the balance of the funds.
Whilst the club will continue to face severe financial contraints and will not be out of danger, with careful stewardship and positive support from the supporters and from the council, the club can once again look to the future.
The club will continue with its work in the community improving its relationship with the fans and the town as a whole.
The club's future lies in its successful youth policy and whilst there needs to be careful financial management it is not proposed to cut the youth policy investment. The club believes that Peter Trevivian is doing an excellent job in laying the good foundations for the club's future and our manager, Alan Little, will continue to be given every possible support.
The board is committed to the club, not to individuals, and will strive to ensure the club continues as successfully as possible long after the present board have served their term, so that future supporters can also benefit from all our endeavours.
From 2000. Good to see Peter's work paid off.
