Spurs dangerman – Tom Huddlestone

Having successfully dispatched Bournemouth, Brighton, Leeds and Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur are next on Southend’s Carling Cup hit list. The 1-0 home win over the Red Devils will of course live long in the memory of Southend fans and a trip to White Hart Lane is a fine reward for that magnificent performance.

Spurs come in to Wednesday’s game on a good run of form, having won their last three games, including a 5-1 demolition of Charlton on December 9th. Southend meanwhile look like they might have turned the corner, a victory at home to Southampton being followed by a draw at Luton.

The last time the two sides met, it was also in this competition, Southend shocking Spurs 3-2 courtesy of Gary Bennett and Dave Martin, but going out on the away goals rules. The Spurs team that day featured the likes of Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker and there’s likely to be an array of internationals facing the Shrimpers on Wednesday evening.

Dimitar Berbatov, Aaron Lennon, Paul Robinson, Jermain Defoe and Ledley King are among the players who could be in action, although it will be interesting to see whom Martin Jol starts with. Spurs will have one eye on the busy Christmas period and may rest some players, but even then Jol has plenty of fine players at his disposal.

In fact the main man at Spurs currently is someone yet to gain full international honours. Tom Huddlestone has been their midfield lynchpin these last few weeks and his stunning goal at Manchester City on Sunday was indicative of his potential. With his combination of size and skill, he could cause Southend’s midfield real problems.

As for Southend, the team is likely to be unchanged from the one that drew on Friday night. Mark Gower and Kevin Maher, both formerly on the books at Tottenham, will be particularly keen to put on a good showing, whilst another goal from Freddy Eastwood against top flight opposition will probably add a few thousand pounds on to his transfer value.

There will be over 5,000 Southend fans in the away end at White Hart Lane – the fifth ground Southend have played at this season that has hosted an England international – plus a fair few Shrimpers dotted around the home areas (yours truly included), so hopefully we can give the boys plenty of support. Most bookmakers rate Southend around the 11/1 mark – i.e. giving us an 8.33% chance of winning – and that seems about right. The Shrimpers probably used up all their cup good luck when beating Manchester United, but you never know…

If it's anything like today (I have simple meteorological expectations) it'll be fairly pea-souped in the morning and less so later
