Something was tweeted about:
4 WORDSWORTH
9 MOONEY
10 PAYNE
16 HUNT

Otherwise, no change.

Hurst will be 14 again. I imagine the rest of the squad will also keep their numbers from last season.

They don't like to rush this to ensure it is as up to date as possible.

As to squad numbers, the shirts they wore on Sunday were all named up so pretty much as per post #2 above. Only thing of note is that Payne is taking #10.

Indeed he is, as per his tweet a few days ago, which I now can't find!

Especially when some players want particular numbers and quite frankly they don't deserve them.

Exactly this.

Plus, a youngster has a super season up top with number 20, and is in your first 11, do you give him number 10, or no change so you keep the pressure off him and keep him on his toes.

I imagine this has caused the delay with Phil, and he has gone for it and given Payne 10 - huge call.

Why on earth is it a "huge call"??? If a player performs really well - nobody cares if his number is 20 or 10. If he plays badly? He is seen to be crap - whatever number he wears.
Since the days of 1-11 plus subs was scrapped - it makes absolutely zero difference what number any player is.....,unless an individual has a particular desire for a special number a la Beckham et all.

Huge call? Is possibly the least important decision Phil Brown makes all season.

I think you might be taking my post a little too seriously....

I've got Daniel Sturridge as a striker - his peak was 3 seasons ago but he still makes a cameo here and there. I can't take the number 9 off him and Id like to think the rest of the strikers understand.

I'm very strict...with a touch of OCD thrown in...Goalkeepers 1,13,22,33,44,55 and the strongest side I have at the start of the season get the first 11 squad numbers....senior back up players generally in the 20's and 30's and youth teamers get 40 and upwards.

All squad numbers are re-assessed at the start of every season.....people might not like it, but I'm running a modern club and don't give a toss if my virtual fans have to shell out every season to avoid their virtual shirts being virtually out of date.

Keepers were always the same for me 1, 13, 24, 32 (don't know why)

Other than that, your system is very cut throat, I couldn't do that to the (virtual) lads.

New signings would very rarely get a 1-11 shirt unless the previous owner of said number had been sold or retired. You've got to earn it.

****ing hell....are people actually moaning about not knowing squad numbers? Unbelievably sad

I'm inclined to agree with this. Bit tragic worrying about squad numbers.

The wider point does appear to be valid though. You do wonder whether the club has just ceased bothering making the effort with fans this summer. DVD out late, new kit not yet available to buy, the farce with Fleetwood tickets, Coventry game announcement made as an afterthought (although I concede Coventry are chiefly at fault for this, the club would have known they were looking to move the game), usual lack of updates re stadium etc.

The overwhelming vibe the club is giving off at the moment appears to be: give us your season ticket money in February, then sod you.

Not to mention the loss of revenue from all this tardiness. I imagine a few dads with young kids wanting to get Barrett 26 on their new home shirts. I'd be interested to know if the Shrimpers Trust has been in dialogue with the club about its rather lazy summer. If they aren't, I'm happy to do so under the fanzine.

One difference - no-one has number 13 for me.

I had a serious problem a few years back (FM11 maybe) - I couldn't use the no. 13 when playing as SUFC as it told me it has been "set aside for the fans" - My reserve keeper is always no. 13...I nearly resigned on the spot, but managed to struggle on to win multiple Champions League Titles despite this obvious handicap

I'm not too hung up on my reserve keeper's shirt number but I always insist that he is the second name listed on the substitutes' bench. I've had that superstition for about ten years.

Who's on the sub bench:

I go for:

GK
LB
CM
AML/AMR
ST

Usually my RB can slot into CB if needed. I play a solid 4-4-2, with wide AMs.

What's happened with the Fleetwood tickets? I'm almost there now....

It's a tricky beast...you get used to naming 7 subs (obviously GK, Full Back, Centre Back, ML, MC, MR & Striker) then you play in a different league somewhere else or lower down the leagues and can only name 5 subs and have to start sacrificing specialist CB's or FB's for lesser defenders that can play both positions, or midfielders that can play both sides..I usually sacrifice the sub goalie....people don't understand the pressure these changes bring.

But essentially I'm with you...solid 4-4-2 has never failed me...I play attacking right wingers and more conservative wide midfielders on the left...with two CM's one set to support and one to defend....it must work as I've just won the Champions League with Stalybridge Celtic!

You really don't get it do you? It is about communication, something that never is seemingly that forthcoming from the club. If other clubs can make this information available why can't Southend? There is virtually nothing worth reading on the official website (one of the main reasons I use this board) and nothing has been announced regarding squad numbers for the season. It seems to me that people have made their own mind up that the numbers will be the same but why can't the club just do a simple thing right?

If you think that is sad, fine but to me it is all about communication and keeping people informed. Why the **** does everything here have to turn out to be a row or an insult?

I really don't get it, tbh. Seems a really, really small gripe and comes across to me as moaners looking to moan (standard around here).

People complaining because the club haven't told them which player will be wearing which shirt. At what point should I just give up and accept that the world has gone completely mad. I'm struggling to think of something that matters less.
