Steve Arnold

Anyone else a bit disappointed Arnold isn’t playing with a dislocated finger? Lot of keepers will play on if they dislocate a finger during a game etc.

Hopefully he’ll be back Tuesday
An outfield player could have it strapped and very likely play. A goalkeeper? Not a chance in hell. He’ll likely be out for weeks!

You can fix a dislocation, strap it up, etc, but the muscles and ligaments are gonna be buggered for a while and you can't keep goal like that. As an ex-keeper, trying to play with any sort of hand/wrist injury is pretty much a guarantee that you'll perform badly, you'll have the self-preservation voice coming too clearly into your head which you really don't need.

Its the hesitation factor of not wanting to hurt it more while its injured, you will not be at your best while in the back of your head you know your finger is messed up.

Exactly, that's what I meant by self-preservation voice. And if you let that in it can manifest itself in other ways not directly even related to your hand.

Which brings us to tonight's game. Mr Brown reckons he's 50/50 for tonight. If that is true then was the injury really a dislocation? and if it was, then is he having to play through the discomfort of an injury that should take 4 weeks to heal? (albeit with an injection). Tonight will tell.

Like all injuries it depends on the severity. Ralph was OK, others would be having specialist head scans and out for a month.

Then of course you have the Timlin factor in each individual. I reckon Arny scores quite high on that scale.

Yeah,I get that riggers, I just wouldn't want him to play for the cause and then be out for longer as a result.

Yes i know you do. I was really pointing that out for some the Shrimper zone doctors on here who seem to know best when it comes to injuries they have never had.

I doubt we will see either Arnold or Ogogo tonight but PB has to give us fans something to discuss and try to instil some hope...

I don't know too much about dislocations, surely there are levels of seriousness with them? Is it possible, if Brown says he's 50/50, that it was a minor dislocation that's gone back but now just needs a bit of time to recover?

I hope that is the case as he's a huge loss for us - unsettles the defence massively having a goalkeeper who they don't have too much confidence in.

PB did say after the injury was announced that Arnold hadn’t trained for a couple of days implying that he felt that was a short term injury and so I’m not surprised he is back in contention and as others have said maybe the injury isn’t as bad as has been implied.

Back when I was a youngster, I played American football. I dislocated my finger a few times and played on after getting it strapped up to the finger next to it, usually just needing a few mins on the sideline to get it pushed back into place and taped up. So it's definitely possible to do if the dislocation isn't a "bad" one.

But it's worth bearing in mind that:

1. I didn't need to be able to catch the ball. I played on the defence, I just had to stop the other bloke catching it and thump him if he did.
2. None of those dislocations were too complex.
3. It hurt like hell and it prolonged the time to truly recover from it.
4. I was a ******** to do something as silly as that and my coach should never have let me do it.

I still went to hospital each time afterwards to get it checked up properly.

Though to be fair, the time I was stung on the finger by a wasp just before a game began was far more painful than any time I dislocated my finger. That was genuinely awful.
