Man in charge, as we turn our attentions back to the more mundane League programme, is Tony Bates from Stoke who, when he is not refereeing, works, yes, in the pottery industry.

He is top of the whole list of Football League referees. Well he is if you arrange them in alphabetical order and, to be fair, pretty near the top on ability too.

Vastly experienced referee who can consider himself unfortunate to have been passed over in favour of the fast-tracked younger and certainly no better breed of referee. Does not seek the limelight or headlines, just gets on with the job fairly and firmly. Was a FIFA linesman and lined a Cup Final.

Has refereed Southend a lot before, most recently in the FA Cup win over Dagenham, when he red-carded their keeper late in the game. Also took charge of the remarkable 5-3 win over Bournemouth (nil-nil at half-time).

Assistants will be Rob Madley from West Yorkshire, Paul Marsden from Lancashire and scouser Wayne Trott will display the numbers.
