Assuming Stockport have remembered to tell him the new kick-off time, Saturdays referee will be Craig Pawson from Sheffield in his third season as a League referee. As part of the Development Group of young officials who they hope have a decent future in the game, he has had a load of Championship matches already this season.

His card count is below average, although he had his first cardless match of the season only last week so don't expect another one of them anytime soon.

This will be his fourth Southend match, the most recent being the 2-1 home win over Bristol Rovers last season when he shared half a dozen yellows equally.

Previously he has refereed Southend twice before in away games, both the season before last. Firstly in the 2-2 draw at Tranmere when he sent off Laurent and one of theirs and cautioned 5 too.

The other match he officiated was the "dead" game at the end of that season at Oldham, which I understand was a slightly messy performance with at least one strange caution.

He had an excellent season for his last year in the Conference and was rewarded with the 2007/8 Conference play-off final at Wembley in front of 40,000 plus fans.

Assisting will be Nick Greenhalgh from Lancashire and Alf Greenwood from North Yorkshire with Jonathon Hunt travelling all the way from County Durham to hold up the numbers board.
