I've just received a text message from apparantly Merseyside Police asking me to contact them quoting a reference number.

It is actually addressed to a Ms Jones, who obviously is not me and I do not know any Ms Jones!

What do I do?

Is it a scam?

Bit worried about calling the number back incase I get a hideous bill etc.

Do police send out txt msgs anyway?

The number is 0151 777 6813, which I cannot find on Google...

It sounds like it's a scam, what is the reply number? Is there a clue that it's a premium rate number?

Just added the number above mate. It is a Merseyside number and very close to the actual Merseyside police contact numbers.

Since when do Police send out txts?

Maybe I should ring one of the numbers on the MP website and ask WTF is going on?

Yeah, Id just leave it. If they want to speak to you they can call you.

Thats the customer service desk at St Helens police Station

If thats the case then Lee call them and let them know who you are in-case they have the wrong person, but before you tell them who you are ask them to prove who they are

Scott

I rang the number and asked them who I was speaking to, it all seemed pretty kosher to me.

I agree with you about letting them know they have contacted the wrong person.

No harm in calling them, just to clear up any confusion and to end the enquiry there.

If an African man named George then proceeds to inform you about a princely fortune, then you hang up.
