Strangest Set-Pieces

Playing as Exter on PFYC, I remembered a game at The Hall against them (I think in our Div. 4 promo year) when they had a free kick and they employed a strange tactic.

They swapped the ball around like it was a hot spud, then suddenly put it down just when the free kick taker was about to shoot.

Very strange... and I don't think it worked.

I think the player concerned was a very stocky black player with long hair... and he was cr*p.

I know Maher took a very cheeky free kick this season... so... what other strange set pieces do you remember over the years on our hallowed turf?

Didn't Ricky Otto score from a corner once?

I think it was Mansfield earlier this season who employed a very strange tactic at corners. Basically they all ran around like headless chickens in the area, confusing the defence (not hard in our case), only for the guy taking the corner kick to pass the ball to a solitary figure a few yards outside the box, who then slammed the ball towards goal. IIRC it was quite effective ... but not as productive as perhaps they wanted ...

There was Adrian Clarke's one a bit ago, where one of our players flicked it up and it was smacked off the volley. I do believe this was succesful.

I remember vaguely one against Reading were we caught about 8 of their palyers offside!

The player you mention with long black hair was called Bailey, cant remember his first name. And I think you'll find from one of these very strange free kicks one of Exeter's big guys planted a header past Sammy into the net at the North Bank End!!

Strangest free kick I've seen us take was the Powell/Harkness one v. Watford when both players ran over the ball and left it to each other!!!!!

Hull employed a strange tactic this season from their corners. They all grouped together before the taker was about to kick the ball, then they all ran off in different directions.

there was one towards the end of this season (can't remember who we were playing) when they had a free kick near the half way line, two players ran up to take it, ran into each other and fell over. I think Leon even tried to come away with the ball saying one of the players touched it.

Swansea. Got the Trust's Free-Kick Of The Season award/ Was their number 5 and Spanish star Martinez!

Then we had Maher's trick kick where he waits until the ref isn't looking too hard, approaches the ball as if to steady it with his hands then steps back as the ball miraculously bounces a couple of inches above the ground all on its own, just right to be chipped over the wall for someone nippy to run on to. This nearly worked twice recently.

with the new off-side rule in place i saw barnsley doing a pretty clever piece of work, they always had 3 players standing right in front of keeper, then they ran off in the direction of the ball just before it was kicked to give the keeper no visibility. excellent work from paul hart - shame the muppet couldn't hit the target though!!

What about the Scarborough one against us in the replay at their gaff. Stenstaovich or whatever he was called walked over to take the corner, he very slightly touched the ball, so it moved a full role and casually walked off, another Scarborough player walks over and dribbles the ball off with the Southend players wondering what the hell was going on!

What about Bramble's free-kick away to Hartlepool(I din't go got told about it later) were he lobbed the ball into the stand or something.

I think it was Rochdale last season where they had a free kick about 25 yards out just to the left of goal. Rochdale player took a shot attempting to curl it into the top corner but the ball went out of play for a throw in to us about 30 yards from the goalline on the far side.
