Southend United boss Paul Sturrock has dismissed speculation linking him with the vacant manager's job at Torquay as "rumour-mongering".

The Devon side are looking for a replacement for Paul Buckle.
Sturrock has managed Plymouth twice and still has ties to Devon, but says he is planning for the long-term at Southend.

He told BBC Essex: "Two-and-two get put together and make five, rumour-mongering is something the papers do very well."

He continued: "I came here to put a team together and structure a football club.
"I haven't put the team together as I would like it and that's something I want to do this season."

Sturrock, who guided Southend to a 13th placed finish in his first season in charge, is meeting to discuss next season's budget and transfer targets on Thursday.

However he would not be drawn on speculation linking the club with a move for Millwall striker Neil Harris.

"I've been in football a lot of years, and this is always the time that all the gossiping comes out," Sturrock said.

"It can be disappointing for fans, who get excited about who we might be bringing to the football club, the fans will be the first to know if we sign any footballers."

The Southend boss has targeted several new faces but still has to negotiate new contracts with Craig Easton and Blair Sturrock.

Doesn't matter if we are considered a smaller or bigger club to be honest, the thing to be happy about is Luggy's comments about him reorganising the club on the football side. VERY positive news...

if torquay want him they can have him as its not that much of a loss, and if he wants to go then he will be taking a massive step backwards, bet blair would go along to torquay too.

well said tottenham, Wouldnt be a major loss, at all. Turn of the year we were 12th looking for the playoffs, which as I said should be the min with the "players" he had assembled, and then we finish 13th, 14 points from our last 14 games, with woefully players, including his son, plus if he went to torquay, he would get more sleep.!!

It'd be a massive loss, one that could see us struggle towards the bottom rather the top.

how would the team go with him ? maybe two or three players at tops, we have the best under contract so core of the side will still be here.

Playing for a manager who didn't sign them .. i don't suppose you remember when Peter Taylor took over from Barry Fry, poor ****er never stood a chance

if he goes to torquay he wants his head testing, but if he wants to talk to them then let him go and we can have the compensation payments for players, not worth trying to keep a manager if he dont wanna be here, same thing with the players.

Have you ever put anything on here that has a positive slant? I think what Luggy did for us last season was nothing short of miraculous, and the dip we saw was caused by having a short squad which came about from the troubles of the previous season.

I think he said its just a rumour didnt he, he wants to stay.

I am sure Captain Birdseye and Tottenham are the same bloke. Surely there cannot be two people that thick?

To be honest if Sturrock can get a team together in such a short space of time and still finish mid table, that seems like great managing to me. Fair enough we lost it a bit towards the end of the season, but now the players know each other well we can build on that for next season. To see Sturrock go would, in my opinion, be a loss to the club. One thing we do need at Southend right now is stability, and Sturrock staying at Southend would help this.
